Chapter 2

The tranquil atmosphere of the memorial garden had completely shattered, replaced by a heavy, suffocating tension that seemed to choke the very air. Alessio slowly rose to his feet, keeping Ruby tucked securely behind the protective bulk of his legs. His dark, calculating eyes swept over the uprooted flower beds, the shattered stems, and the desecrated soil that had once been his late wife’s sanctuary.

"Who gave the order to touch this earth?" Alessio asked. His voice was not a shout; it was a deadly, quiet rasp that carried the weight of an executioner’s blade.

Before Claudia could scramble to her feet and answer, Marco Hale stepped out from the shade of the rolling flower racks. Dressed in an immaculate, expensive tailored suit, his polished leather shoes crunched arrogantly over the spilled soil. He moved smoothly, placing himself deliberately between Alessio and the damaged flower beds.

Evelyn, still trembling near the greenhouse, let out a small whimper. She looked terrified, slowly backing away from her own mother as Claudia brushed the dirt from her designer clothes.

"Calm down, Alessio," Marco said, his tone dripping with condescension. He aggressively closed the distance, forcefully shoving Alessio in the chest with both hands. "It’s just dirt. Leave it alone. We needed to clear space for the new catering tents."

Alessio did not move a single inch from the shove. He stared at Marco’s hands, then up to the man’s smug face. "You put your hands on me in my home, Marco. And you call my wife's memory 'just dirt'."

"You're becoming entirely too sentimental," Marco sneered, adjusting his wristwatch. "The syndicate needs a leader, not a grieving gardener. Back off."

Marco, misjudging the absolute stillness of the Mafia boss, swung a heavy, telegraphed right hook aimed straight at Alessio’s jaw.

Alessio barely seemed to move. He slipped the punch with the fluid, practiced grace of a veteran brawler, letting Marco’s fist sail harmlessly past his ear. In the exact same breath, Alessio pivoted, driving one explosive, devastating counterpunch directly across Marco’s face. The sickening crack of fracturing bone echoed off the greenhouse glass.

Marco’s eyes rolled back in his head. He spun backward, his dead weight crashing violently into a massive rolling flower rack. The iron wheels shrieked against the stone as the rack raced sideways, slamming brutally into two wooden planting tables. Ceramic pots tumbled and shattered into a thousand jagged pieces. Gardening baskets flipped open, burying the terrace in dark potting soil. Marco crashed down into the ruin, the collapsed wooden frames burying him completely.

He did not get back up.

Claudia shrieked, a sound of pure, unadulterated panic. Seeing her associate laid out in the wreckage, she completely lost her mind. She grabbed a jagged shard of a broken ceramic planter from the ground and lunged wildly toward Ruby, aiming to use the child as a shield.

Alessio didn't even look at her. He simply shot his left arm out, catching her wrist in a vice grip that made the ceramic shard drop from her paralyzed fingers. With a terrifying pivot of his hips, he delivered one thunderous, open-handed slap across Claudia’s face.

The impact lifted her off her expensive heels. Claudia spun backward, her arms flailing, and crashed headfirst into a towering row of empty decorative planters. The heavy iron stands toppled in a rapid, deafening sequence, clack-clack-clack, raining loose, dried flowers across the stone terrace. Claudia collapsed among the overturned pots, groaning in absolute agony, a dark bruise already blooming on her jaw.

The garden fell dead silent, save for the bubbling of the pond.

Then, young Evelyn stepped forward. Her hand was shaking violently, but her eyes were fixed with absolute certainty. She ignored her bleeding mother and pointed a trembling finger toward one narrow, entirely untouched strip of soil nestled tightly beside the greenhouse wall.

Alessio followed the girl's gaze. He noticed that every single flower bed in the garden had been aggressively destroyed, except for that one specific patch of earth.

He slowly turned his back on his daughter, stepping over the broken ceramics, and loomed over the bleeding, terrified forms of Claudia and Marco.

"Now tell me," Alessio said, his voice quiet, lethal, and colder than the grave. "What’s buried on that land that has you all so afraid."

Claudia’s face drained of all color, her expression twisting into profound, absolute terror.
