Chapter 9

The heat from the burning staircase was blistering, sucking the oxygen directly out of the cellar. Alessio didn't look back at the inferno. He grabbed the heavy steel lockbox from Claudia’s shaking hands, tucking it under his arm as they sprinted toward the hidden entrance behind the empty wine casks.
Gianni slammed his shoulder into the secret mechanism, and the false wall swung open, revealing a dark, damp, narrow tunnel carved out of the bedrock. They poured inside, Gianni hauling the heavy stone door shut behind them, cutting off the roaring sound of the fire and plunging them into near-absolute darkness.
Alessio pulled a small tactical flashlight from his belt, the narrow beam cutting through the damp, musty air.
"Maria!" Alessio shouted, his voice echoing off the stone walls. "Ruby!"
"Boss! We're here!" a desperate voice called out from the darkness ahead.
Alessio pushed forward, the beam of his light catching Maria, the trusted nanny, huddled against the tunnel wall. She was clutching a frightened, tear-streaked Ruby tightly against her chest. Evelyn was kneeling beside them, holding her younger cousin's hand and trying to be brave.
"Daddy!" Ruby cried, breaking away from Maria and running into Alessio’s free arm.
Alessio dropped to one knee, wrapping his arm around his daughter and burying his face in her hair. She smelled of the pond water and fear, but she was alive. The crushing weight that had been suffocating his chest since the radio call finally cracked, allowing him to breathe again.
"I've got you, my brave girl," Alessio whispered fiercely. "I'm right here."
He looked up at Evelyn, giving the twelve-year-old a deeply respectful nod. "You kept her safe, Evelyn. You have my gratitude. Forever."
Evelyn offered a small, watery smile, but her eyes darted behind Alessio, landing on her mother. Claudia stepped into the light of the flashlight. Her expensive clothes were torn, soaked in wine and dirt, her face bruised and utterly defeated.
"Evelyn," Claudia croaked, reaching a trembling hand out. "Come here, baby."
Evelyn didn't move. She stepped closer to Maria, looking at her mother with a mixture of pity and profound disgust. "You tried to hurt Ruby. You buried that box. You aren't my mother anymore."
Claudia let out a strangled sob, collapsing against the damp stone wall of the tunnel. She had lost her power, her associate, and now, finally, her daughter.
"Save your tears, Claudia," Alessio said coldly, standing back up. "We aren't out of this yet."
"Where does this tunnel lead?" Gianni asked, reloading his weapon in the dark. "The old carriage house?"
"Yes," Alessio confirmed. "It empties into the storm drain just past the property line. I have three ghost cars stationed two blocks away for emergencies exactly like this. But the New York men are professionals. If they breached the estate this quickly, they might have the perimeter locked down."
As if on cue, the heavy stone door at the entrance of the tunnel, far behind them, shuddered with a massive impact. The booming sound echoed terrifyingly in the confined space.
"They found the hidden door," Gianni grimaced.
"They're using a battering ram," Alessio calculated, listening to the rhythmic, booming impacts. "We have maybe two minutes before that stone cracks. Gianni, take the girls. Run for the exit. I will hold the tunnel."
"No, Boss," Gianni argued fiercely. "My job is to protect you."
"Your job is to follow my orders!" Alessio barked, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "Take my daughters and get them in the car. I will not let them take this family down in the dark."

Alessio handed the heavy steel lockbox containing the ledgers to Gianni.
"Guard this with your life," Alessio said. "It is the key to tearing their entire syndicate apart."
