Chapter 17

Three years after the engagement reception, we held Merewyn’s eightieth birthday on the same terrace.

Bright evening.

Too many flowers.

Too much cake.

Exactly what she wanted.

Tessara supervised elder guest service.

Jonah attended.

So did two branches once barred from Veynham events.

No Ambrose.

His choice this time.

Corisande came as my guest.

No engagement ring.

Not yet.

Mother wore her newer hearing aids.

At one point a server accidentally set a champagne glass too close to her elbow.

Merewyn stared at it.

Then at Corisande.

The entire table went quiet.

Corisande covered her face.

“Oh, God.”

Mother smiled.

“Relax. I’m keeping these.”

Everyone laughed.

Including Corisande.

Good.

The old moment no longer owned the room.

Later, my driver pulled the car around.

Different man.

Different system.

Ordinary route home.

Mother looked at me.

“Where are we going?”

“Home.”

“Are you sure?”

I smiled.

“Yes.”

She leaned toward Tessara.

“Check anyway.”

Tessara laughed.

“Already did.”

Of course.

I helped Mother into the car.

No hidden destination.

No switched escort.

No family waiting in an abandoned house to force history into the present.

Briar House was open now.

Jonah could enter through the front door.

The exiled names were spoken again.

My father remained loved without being treated as infallible.

And Corisande stood on the terrace knowing that if she wanted a future beside me, she would have to ask for it directly.

No father.

No driver.

No trap.

She caught my eye.

I walked back toward her.

Three years earlier, my mother had grabbed my sleeve and said four words:

“Don’t get in that car.”

She thought she was warning me about a journey.

She wasn’t.

She was warning me about a family habit.

May you like

We had spent generations allowing other people to decide where truth was allowed to take us.

That night, for once, we changed the destination ourselves.
