Chapter 8

Ambrose finally arrived.

No longer calm.

Good.

He had lost control of the room before entering it.

Jonah turned on him first.

“You said Aldric knew.”

Ambrose did not answer.

Corisande looked at her father.

“You told me the same.”

There.

He had built consent out of separate lies.

To Jonah:

Aldric knows a private meeting is coming.

To Corisande:

Jonah only wants one conversation.

To Nathaniel:

The boss is aware of the route.

To me:

Nothing.

Classic intermediary power.

If everyone talks directly, he becomes unnecessary.

“Why isolate me?”

I asked.

Ambrose looked around.

“Because this conversation cannot happen with your capos whispering in your ear.”

Wrong.

“My capos aren’t here.”

He glanced toward the door.

No one.

I had chosen that intentionally.

“This is still my answer.”

He looked irritated.

Good.

Then the deeper motive surfaced.

If Jonah’s branch returned, Ambrose expected to control the reconciliation.

His security firms employed several exiled descendants.

His companies connected their businesses.

His daughter was marrying me.

He would become the bridge between restored Veynham branches.

Not head.

Not boss.

Something subtler.

The man everyone needed to call.

“That was the real plan.”

He smiled faintly.

“Influence is not a crime.”

“No.”

I leaned forward.

“Manipulation is still manipulation even when it wears a dinner jacket.”

Corisande’s face tightened.

She finally understood that her father had never needed the marriage itself.

He needed what came with it.

Access to both sides.

She whispered:

“You told me I was repairing history.”

Ambrose looked at her almost impatiently.

“You were.”

“Was I?”

Silence.

Then:

“Or was I marrying the door you wanted opened?”

He had no answer good enough.

She removed her engagement ring.

Not handed to me.

May you like

Held it.

For now.
