Chapter 10

Arthur had never heard of the second ring.

Daniel had.

Samuel told him decades earlier.

Vittorio created a balance inside Bellacorte.

The boss wore one signet.

The Custodian wore the other.

The purpose sounded noble.

If the boss destroyed the family, the Custodian could act.

But Vittorio corrupted the system.

He chose the Custodian himself.

Loyalty became circular.

Sarah looked at the photograph of Elias.

“Who wears it now?”

Daniel shook his head.

“That is what Elias was trying to learn.”

Arthur looked toward Margaret.

She had been brought into the library again.

Her face changed when she saw the second ring.

“You know.”

Margaret nodded.

“Samuel saw it once.”

“On who?”

“Vittorio’s brother.”

Arthur frowned.

“Uncle Gabriel.”

Gabriel Bellacorte died forty years earlier.

Car accident.

Another old death.

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Was anyone in this family actually killed the way we were told?”

Margaret continued.

“Samuel said Gabriel wore the second ring before Vittorio.”

“So Custodian predates Father.”

“Yes.”

Sarah looked at Arthur.

“The role is older than your rivalry.”

He nodded.

Which meant Daniel’s revenge had been aimed too low.

The brothers were pieces in a system built before either understood power.

Arthur asked Margaret:

“Who inherited Gabriel’s ring?”

“I don’t know.”

“Samuel?”

“No.”

“Did he ever see it again?”

Margaret hesitated.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“The night he died.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“On who?”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Samuel would never tell me.”

Arthur slammed his hand against the table.

Sarah looked at him.

Arthur stopped.

Breathed.

Then:

“Why?”

Margaret looked toward David.

“Because he said the person wearing it was someone we would never survive accusing.”

David went pale.

“Mom.”

Sarah saw.

“You know too.”

David shook his head.

“No.”

“Then why that face?”

“Because she told me once.”

“What?”

David looked at Margaret.

She tried to stop him.

“David.”

He ignored her.

“She told me the ring belonged to a woman.”

Silence.

Arthur stared.

“What woman?”

“I don’t know.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

David continued.

“Mom always said that was the part Samuel couldn’t accept.”

Daniel frowned.

“A woman ran Father’s hidden network?”

Margaret snapped:

“Why is that impossible?”

Daniel said nothing.

Sarah almost smiled despite everything.

Arthur did not.

He was thinking backward.

Women inside the Bellacorte orbit.

His mother dead decades ago.

Aunts.

Housekeepers.

Widows.

One name surfaced.

“Catherine.”

Daniel looked at him.

Arthur’s aunt Catherine Bellacorte had been Vittorio’s older sister.

Never married.

Managed family households.

Raised half the children while men conducted business.

Died fourteen years ago.

Margaret stared.

Arthur saw.

“You know that name.”

Margaret whispered:

“Samuel was afraid of her.”

Daniel went still.

“Why?”

“He said Catherine heard everything because men spoke as if women weren’t in rooms.”

Sarah looked toward Arthur.

Exactly.

Invisible power.

Arthur sat.

“Catherine died.”

Margaret nodded.

“Then the ring moved.”

“To who?”

“I don’t know.”

Sarah looked at the generations.

Gabriel.

Catherine.

Unknown successor.

Not a father-to-son system.

A role moving through invisibility.

“Elias found the current wearer,” Sarah said.

Daniel nodded.

“And now he’s gone.”

Arthur looked at the photograph.

“What did Elias say before disappearing?”

Daniel repeated it.

“The man keeping Vittorio alive is already inside Arthur’s house.”

Sarah frowned.

“Man.”

Daniel nodded.

“So current Custodian is male.”

“Unless Elias meant it generically.”

Sarah thought.

“Who lives inside the estate but isn’t treated as power?”

Arthur looked toward the doorway.

Staff.

One person came to mind.

Samuel Price.

Arthur’s estate manager.

Sixty-seven.

Served Vittorio before Arthur.

Handled maintenance.

Keys.

Staff rotations.

Guests.

Invisible.

Arthur’s face darkened.

Sarah saw.

“Don’t accuse him.”

“I’m not.”

“Good.”

Arthur called for Samuel Price.

No answer.

His room was empty.

Bed untouched.

Closet open.

One item missing.

An old black overcoat.

On the pillow sat a single red sock.

Emma’s.

May you like

And beneath it—

the second Bellacorte signet ring.
