Chapter 6

Arthur took his father’s grave seriously for the first time in twenty-eight years.

Not the grave itself.

What Vittorio had buried around the family.

Stories.

Symbols.

Claims.

Daniel had apparently spent decades living with the belief that Arthur inherited his place by design.

Margaret knew more.

She admitted Daniel had contacted her six years earlier because David’s marriage to Sarah gave him something he had never possessed.

A path inside.

Not to kill Arthur.

To destabilize him.

“Why wait?” Sarah asked.

Margaret sat across from her.

“Daniel wanted Arthur to feel safe first.”

“That’s revenge?”

“It was to him.”

“Did he tell David to hurt me?”

Margaret hesitated.

Sarah saw.

“Yes.”

David looked up from the far chair.

“No.”

Margaret turned.

“You know he did.”

“He told me to make her afraid.”

Sarah stared.

The room went silent.

David’s voice became rough.

“He said if Sarah became afraid of her own house, Arthur would come closer. More visits. More guards. More access.”

Sarah felt sick.

“So you frightened me on purpose.”

“At first.”

“At first?”

David looked ashamed.

“I hated it.”

“You continued.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because then it became easier.”

The honesty was horrifying.

Sarah whispered:

“You discovered you liked control.”

David closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

That was the truth she needed.

Not excuses.

Not Daniel.

Not Margaret.

David had been used.

Then he had chosen.

Arthur stood near the window.

His voice became low.

“Daniel created the conditions.”

He looked at David.

“You made the violence yours.”

David nodded.

“Yes.”

Sarah stared at him.

For the first time she did not need him to beg.

His understanding could not repair what he did.

But it stopped him hiding behind family history.

Arthur turned toward Margaret.

“What was Daniel’s next step?”

“I don’t know.”

“Lie again and this conversation ends.”

Margaret looked at him.

“He wanted Sarah to leave David.”

Sarah frowned.

“Why?”

“Because he wanted you and Emma back inside Arthur’s estate.”

Arthur understood.

“He wanted my daughter home.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Access.”

Sarah looked toward Arthur.

“Through me again.”

Margaret nodded.

Arthur’s expression darkened.

“So David’s violence was meant to push Sarah back to me.”

“Yes.”

“Then Emma’s call worked exactly as Daniel wanted.”

Margaret looked down.

“Yes.”

Sarah’s blood went cold.

The emergency phone.

She had installed it.

She taught Emma.

But the situation around it had been engineered.

Arthur entered immediately.

Now Sarah and Emma were under his roof.

Exactly where Daniel wanted.

Arthur looked toward the doorway.

“Lock the estate.”

One guard reached for his phone.

Sarah stopped him.

“No.”

Arthur turned.

“What?”

“If Daniel wants us there, locking down only tells him we’re scared.”

“He may already have someone inside.”

“Then I want him to think he succeeded.”

Arthur studied his daughter.

The thought was dangerous.

Also intelligent.

Sarah continued.

“Take me and Emma back.”

David looked up sharply.

“No.”

Sarah ignored him.

Arthur frowned.

“Back where?”

“Your estate.”

“That is exactly what Daniel wants.”

“Yes.”

“So we let him see it.”

Arthur stared.

Sarah’s eyes had changed.

Not toward cruelty.

Toward calculation.

“You said he wants revenge.”

“Yes.”

“Then give him the picture he expects.”

Arthur almost smiled.

“My daughter comes home terrified. Grandfather closes the gates. Bellacorte retreats.”

Sarah nodded.

“Meanwhile we watch who moves.”

Margaret looked frightened.

“You don’t know Daniel.”

Sarah turned.

“No.”

She looked at David.

“But I know what his plan did to me.”

Then at Margaret.

“And I know people who live for revenge become predictable.”

Arthur’s smile disappeared.

May you like

Because Sarah was talking about Daniel.

But she could just as easily have meant him.
