Chapter 3

Arthur had one younger brother.

Daniel Bellacorte.

Sarah had seen only three photographs of him.

Twenty-eight years old.

Broad smile.

Dark suit.

Then nothing.

The family story was simple.

Daniel left New York.

Never returned.

Arthur said he wanted another life.

Sarah had never questioned it.

Now Margaret’s words changed every photograph.

Arthur remained silent so long that even David stopped moving.

“Daniel left,” Arthur finally said.

Margaret laughed bitterly.

“No.”

“You were not there.”

“My husband was.”

Arthur stepped closer.

“Careful.”

Margaret looked at the bodyguards.

Then at Arthur.

“Samuel Bennett drove Daniel that night.”

Sarah’s eyes moved between them.

“Where?”

“No one told me.”

“Why?”

Margaret’s jaw tightened.

“Because Samuel came home covered in blood.”

Arthur’s face changed.

Sarah had never seen her father afraid of a memory.

Margaret continued.

“He said Daniel had discovered something about Arthur’s father.”

Arthur’s voice lowered.

“My father.”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“He never told me.”

“Convenient.”

“He was terrified.”

Margaret looked at Sarah.

“Samuel said if anything happened to him, I was to stay away from the Bellacortes.”

Sarah’s eyes hardened.

“You did the opposite.”

Margaret met her gaze.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because twenty years later I found out Arthur Bellacorte had a daughter.”

Sarah’s stomach turned.

There.

The truth had a shape now.

Margaret continued:

“You were twenty-one. Young. Protected. Spoiled.”

Arthur’s eyes sharpened.

“Choose your next words well.”

Margaret ignored him.

“My husband disappeared because of your family. My son grew up without a father. I worked two jobs while Bellacortes bought buildings and called themselves honorable.”

Sarah stared.

“So you sent David after me.”

David stood.

“Mom.”

Margaret looked at him.

“Sit.”

He did.

That obedience told Sarah something she should have noticed years earlier.

David had always feared Margaret more than Arthur.

Margaret turned back.

“I introduced you.”

“Why?”

“At first?”

She looked toward Arthur.

“Revenge.”

Sarah’s chest tightened.

The marriage suddenly felt contaminated.

Every early memory.

Every dinner.

Every kiss.

“David knew?”

Margaret hesitated.

Sarah saw.

“Did he know?”

David answered.

“Not at first.”

Sarah turned.

His face looked wrecked.

“When?”

“After our engagement.”

She stared.

“You married me knowing?”

“Yes.”

“Knowing your mother chose me because my grandfather killed your father?”

“Yes.”

“Did you love me?”

David looked away.

That hurt more than the shove.

Margaret said:

“He did.”

Sarah’s eyes flashed.

“Don’t.”

Margaret stopped.

Arthur looked at David.

“What changed?”

David laughed bitterly.

“Nothing changed.”

“You didn’t start hurting Sarah seven years ago.”

“No.”

“When?”

David’s jaw tightened.

“After Emma was born.”

Arthur’s expression became lethal.

“Why?”

David looked toward his daughter.

Emma was in the hallway with another guard now.

Safe.

David lowered his voice.

“Because Mom said the child made everything complicated.”

Sarah stared at Margaret.

“Emma?”

Margaret said nothing.

“Why would my daughter complicate revenge?”

Arthur understood before Sarah did.

His face darkened.

“Bloodline.”

Margaret looked at him.

Yes.

Sarah whispered:

“What does that mean?”

Arthur’s voice came slowly.

“My father had two sons.”

“Daniel and you.”

“Yes.”

“If Daniel disappeared without children…”

Sarah stopped.

Arthur continued.

“Then everything eventually came through me.”

“And me.”

“Yes.”

“And Emma.”

Arthur nodded.

Sarah looked at Margaret.

“You wanted access to Bellacorte through me.”

Margaret’s face remained calm.

“At first.”

“What happened after Emma?”

The old woman finally looked ashamed.

“The plan changed.”

“What plan?”

Margaret shook her head.

“I won’t tell you.”

Arthur smiled.

Margaret went pale.

It was not a warm smile.

“You spent twenty-nine years hating my family.”

“Yes.”

“And you think silence will protect you now?”

Margaret looked toward David.

Then said:

“Because revenge stopped being mine.”

Arthur’s smile disappeared.

“Whose?”

May you like

She whispered:

“Daniel’s.”
