Chapter 2

I ended the dinner.
Mother ate upstairs.
Nella stayed with her because Mother asked.
Davina remained in my study.
No audience.
No shouting.
I wanted facts more than fear.
“How long have you known my father?”
She stared at the carpet.
“My whole life.”
Not the answer I expected.
Lucian Vale had once been one of Aldric Ashenford’s closest men.
Not captain.
Not adviser.
Something harder to name.
The person Father sent when an order mattered but reputation mattered more.
Then came Bellmoor.
Fifteen years earlier.
A warehouse district under Ashenford control caught fire during a dispute with another crew.
Three Blackwell—Ashenford—trucks were supposed to evacuate valuables before the fire spread.
Lucian redirected one truck.
Not for cargo.
For two families trapped in neighboring apartments.
He saved them.
He also lost nearly everything Father expected removed from the warehouse.
Father called it disobedience.
Publicly.
Then blamed Lucian for the entire failure.
The other men kept their positions.
Lucian was removed.
His name became shorthand for unreliability.
Davina was twenty.
Old enough to understand humiliation.
Young enough to make it permanent.
“Your father came here five years ago to confront mine.”
“Yes.”
“And you came with him.”
“Yes.”
“Why hide that from me?”
Her eyes filled.
“Because by the time we met, Lucian was dead.”
“That does not answer me.”
She whispered:
“Because I knew what you thought of him.”
I had repeated Father’s version more than once.
Lucian Vale chose civilians over family.
Lucian Vale could not follow orders.
Lucian Vale collapsed under pressure.
Stories inherited without examination.
Davina had listened to me repeat the insult her father carried to his grave.
“And the pills?”
She closed her eyes.
“I changed them.”
There.
The room became absolutely still.
“With what?”
“Something that would make him tired.”
Not poison.
Not intended to kill.
That distinction mattered.
Not enough.
“Why?”
Her voice cracked.
“Because he kept trying to end the conversation.”
My father had agreed to meet Lucian privately.
Then refused to admit Bellmoor publicly.
He said saving strangers did not excuse losing Ashenford property.
Lucian demanded he tell me the truth.
Father refused.
Davina became furious.
So when Aldric went upstairs for his medicine—
she changed the bottle.
“I wanted him to sit there long enough to hear my father.”
My jaw tightened.
“He needed those pills.”
“I didn’t understand how much.”

That was the beginning of the answer.
Not the end.
