Chapter 8

The engagement ended that evening.

No guests.

No family tribunal.

No dramatic announcement.

Davina already knew.

She removed the ring herself.

Placed it between us.

“I love you.”

“I know.”

That made her cry harder.

People think betrayal invalidates love.

Sometimes love survives inside the person doing the betraying.

That does not make the betrayal smaller.

“Do you think I killed him?”

I considered carefully.

“No.”

She stared.

Relief came too quickly.

I continued.

“I think you endangered him.”

Relief disappeared.

“I think you realized it.”

Silence.

“I think you had a chance to tell the truth and chose fear.”

Her eyes closed.

“And five years later, when my mother started remembering, you chose fear again.”

That was the line.

Not Bellmoor.

Not Lucian.

Not even the blue pills alone.

Davina had recreated the same moral choice.

Truth threatens position.

So punish the person carrying truth.

Father did it to Lucian.

Davina did it to Mother.

Different scale.

Same instinct.

I would not marry into the repetition.

She whispered:

“I never meant to hurt Elspeth.”

“You withheld food.”

“One meal.”

“More than one.”

She looked ashamed.

“Nella told me.”

Silence.

Then Davina said:

“I just needed her to stop.”

Exactly.

That sentence ends too many cruel stories.

Not I wanted pain.

I wanted resistance to stop.

She picked up the ring.

“What happens now?”

“You leave.”

“No punishment?”

I almost laughed.

“The engagement is gone.”

“The house is gone.”

“My trust is gone.”

I looked at her.

“Not every consequence needs spectacle.”

She nodded.

At the door, she turned.

“Will you tell everyone about my father?”

“Yes.”

Fear crossed her face.

“Everything?”

“Bellmoor.”

I paused.

“Not your pills.”

She stared.

“Why?”

Because Lucian’s name deserved truth.

Davina’s worst act did not need to become the price of restoring him.

Separate responsibility.

May you like

That lesson had taken me forty-five years.

I hoped it stayed.
