Chapter 9

I told the family about Bellmoor.

No dramatic feast.

Just the people who had repeated Father’s version for fifteen years.

I began with my own guilt.

“I called Lucian Vale disloyal.”

Silence.

“I was wrong.”

Then I told them why.

Father ordered the passage sealed.

Civilians remained inside.

Lucian redirected the truck.

Saved them.

Lost property.

Disobeyed.

Every fact.

No saint.

No coward.

One man choosing human lives over an order.

My uncle Cedric frowned.

“So you’re saying insubordination is acceptable?”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“I’m saying motive and consequence matter.”

He hated nuance.

Good.

Hector spoke next.

That mattered more than me.

He had watched Father regret it.

He told them Aldric planned to correct the story before dying.

No one mentioned Davina.

That part belonged elsewhere.

Lucian’s reputation changed slowly.

Some captains apologized privately to people from his old branch.

Others said Father made the best choice he could at the time.

Fine.

Disagreement allowed.

The point was not replacing one myth with another.

It was ending the lie.

Then I made one change.

Ashenford orders involving vulnerable people could be challenged immediately without punishment if someone believed delay created danger.

Not ignored casually.

Challenged.

Rafe laughed.

“We’re formalizing common sense.”

“Apparently necessary.”

That rule became known unofficially as Lucian’s Rule.

I hated names like that.

It survived anyway.

Nella heard about it.

She smiled.

“What?”

“Mrs. Ashenford would like it.”

Mother had not attended.

Too tiring.

Good.

She did not need to perform clarity for a room.

Later, I told her what I had done.

She stared at me.

“Who is Lucian?”

My chest tightened.

Gone again.

Then she smiled.

“Oh.”

Memory returned for one second.

“The man who saved the families.”

“Yes.”

“That was brave.”

Then:

“Did Aldric finally say so?”

I looked at her.

“Yes.”

Not technically.

May you like

But through me.

Maybe that counted.
