Chapter 11

We searched the old kennel office properly.

Not for blood.

Not for bones.

For signs someone had been there.

One cabinet stuck.

Behind it, scratched into the wall:

M + G.

Marina.

Gideon.

Fresh enough.

Beside it, a date.

Nine months earlier.

He had returned.

Then beneath:

I was wrong to stay away.

Nothing else.

Marina touched the letters.

No tears at first.

Then all of them.

I stayed back.

This was not my grief to occupy.

Mother sat beside her.

Interesting.

Two women separated by twenty-two years of lies.

For once, neither trying to control the other.

Then Elias found a small object beneath a loose floorboard.

A wooden toy horse.

Cheap.

Hand-carved.

Marina recognized it immediately.

“My father made these.”

As a child, she had a set.

Each horse represented a place.

Black horse meant home.

White meant safe.

Brown meant moving.

This one was blue.

She laughed through tears.

“What?”

“He never made blue.”

Then she turned it over.

Carved underneath:

PORT CLEMENT.

A coastal town three hours north.

Not a code.

A destination.

Gideon had left it for someone who remembered the childhood game.

Marina.

He expected her eventually to search the place only he knew she would understand.

No ledger.

No hidden empire.

A toy.

Better.

We went the next morning.

Not with a convoy.

Me.

Marina.

Mother refused because her knee still hurt.

Carys definitely not involved.

May you like

Good.
