Chapter 12

Gideon Voss lived above a small marine workshop in Port Clement.

He opened the door himself.

Seventy now.

Gray hair.

Scar over the eyebrow.

Same shoulders from old photographs.

Then he saw Marina.

His face collapsed.

No dramatic words.

He simply whispered:

“Rose.”

Her middle name.

The name engraved inside his ring.

Marina stood completely still.

Then pulled it from her pocket.

Held it out.

He stared.

“Eleanor found you.”

“Yes.”

No hug yet.

Too many years.

Too much missing.

Then he looked at me.

Recognition.

Not warmth.

“Rafferty.”

“Gideon.”

Twenty-two years of family poison reduced to two names in a hallway.

We went inside.

Marina asked the hardest question first.

“Why did you believe Sabine?”

He looked ashamed.

“Because I had already failed you.”

Simple.

He believed guilt faster than hope.

When Sabine said Marina wanted no contact, it confirmed what he feared.

Then, after seeing her with me last winter, he stayed away because he thought:

She chose Winterbourne.

Maybe she finally escaped the Voss story.

He would not pull her backward.

Marina laughed bitterly.

“I was there because Sabine sent me.”

Gideon closed his eyes.

Another lie revealed.

Then she told him everything.

My courtship.

Her original intention.

Falling in love.

Mother recognizing her.

The kennel.

Carys.

The wedding ending.

Gideon’s face hardened at the cage.

Good.

He did not excuse his daughter because she was his daughter.

“You locked Eleanor in a dog run?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I panicked.”

He stared.

“That explains speed. Not choice.”

I looked at him.

Apparently wisdom survived exile.

Marina nodded slowly.

May you like

“I know.”

That mattered more than crying.
