Chapter 16

One year later, Marina visited Winterbourne House.

No wedding gown.

No engagement ring.

Just Marina.

Not Delphina.

That choice mattered.

Mother greeted her in the garden.

No hug immediately.

They sat.

Talked for forty minutes.

Then Mother asked:

“Why did you lock me in the cage?”

Straight.

Marina answered:

“Because you knew who I was and I wanted time to decide whether truth would destroy everything I built.”

“Would it?”

“Yes.”

Mother nodded.

“Then?”

Marina looked toward me in the distance.

“It did.”

Silence.

Then:

“And I’m still alive.”

Mother smiled faintly.

There.

Fear always predicts destruction larger than reality.

Marina lost marriage.

Lost false identity.

Lost Sabine.

But gained Gideon.

Gained herself.

Not even trade.

Just consequence.

Mother then asked:

“Are you sorry?”

“Yes.”

“Would you do it again?”

“No.”

“Good.”

No absolution speech.

They had tea.

That was enough.
