Chapter 10

The recording had been on Vivienne’s old phone.
She had kept it for eighteen months.
Not because she wanted to preserve Elena’s truth.
Because it gave her leverage over Marcus.
Dominic understood before she admitted it.
The siblings looked at each other.
A family alliance built on mutual secrets.
Vivienne finally unlocked the file.
Elena’s voice filled the quiet room.
Steady.
Angry.
Marcus’s came next.
He admitted fabricating the affair evidence.
Not proudly.
Desperately.
He told Elena Cross Strategic would collapse.
He told her hundreds of people would lose jobs.
He told her Dominic would destroy him rather than listen.
Elena answered that those were consequences of his choices.
Then another voice entered.
Vivienne’s.
She begged Elena not to tell Dominic yet.
Not because she believed Marcus was innocent.
Because she believed Dominic would respond violently and make everything worse.
Elena said something that made Vivienne begin crying in the present.
“You keep protecting men from the consequences of who they choose to be.”
No one moved.
The recording continued.
Then came the major twist.
Elena was not speaking to Vivienne as an ordinary friend.
She had made her a promise.
If anything happens to me, stay close to Aria.
Give Dominic the red envelope.
Give Aria my ring when she is old enough.
And do not let Marcus near either of them until Dominic knows the truth.
Dominic slowly looked at Vivienne.
Her face collapsed.
Elena had trusted her.
Not casually.
With Aria.
With Dominic.
With the truth.
And Vivienne had done the exact opposite.
She destroyed the letter.
Kept the ring.
Protected Marcus.
Stayed close to Aria.
Then stayed closer to Dominic.
Eventually becoming the woman he intended to marry.
Dominic’s voice came low.
“Did Elena ask you to take care of Aria?”
Vivienne nodded through tears.
“Yes.”
“You used that trust to enter my house.”
“No.”
Her answer came quickly.
Then she stopped.
Because the truth was not that simple.
“At first, no.”
Dominic waited.
Vivienne’s breathing shook.
“After Elena died, I checked on Aria because I promised.”
“That part was real.”
“Yes.”
“You helped me because she asked.”
“Yes.”
“And when did it change?”
Vivienne looked at the engagement ring lying among the broken decorations.
“I don't know.”
Dominic’s eyes remained on her.
She closed hers.
“That’s a lie.”
Her voice broke.
“I know exactly when.”
Six months after Elena’s death, Dominic thanked Vivienne for helping Aria through a nightmare.
He held her hand.
Just once.
Vivienne felt something.
Not a plan.
Not yet.
But possibility.
She told herself Elena was dead.
Dominic was grieving.
Aria trusted her.
Maybe staying was not betrayal.
Then Marcus reminded her that being close to Dominic protected them both.
If Dominic loved her, the financial scandal might never surface.
The relationship that began partly through genuine care became useful.
Vivienne allowed usefulness to shape it.
Then envy came.
Every time Aria asked for Elena.
Every time Dominic kept a photograph.
Every time the ring reminded Vivienne that Elena had chosen her as a messenger, not a replacement.
Dominic looked at her.
“You didn't steal Elena’s life in one decision.”
Vivienne’s shoulders shook.
“No.”
“You took it one permission at a time.”
She covered her mouth.
Dominic looked toward Marcus.
His face had gone still.
The theft was no longer the worst betrayal.
Marcus had forged a marital betrayal.
Vivienne had betrayed a dying woman’s trust.
And Dominic realized the cruelest part:
Elena had not died believing he betrayed her.
She had learned the truth.
The final question was whether she had ever intended to leave him after that.
Vivienne wiped her face.
Then whispered:
“She didn't.”
Dominic’s eyes lifted.
May you like
Vivienne looked directly at him.
“The last thing Elena asked me was whether you would come with her if she gave you one more chance.”
