Chapter 14

Vivienne did not deny receiving the money.

She looked at the bank record for almost a minute before speaking.

“My mother’s house.”

Dominic waited.

Vivienne’s fingers curled.

Their mother had mortgaged the family home to secure part of Cross Strategic’s debt.

If the company failed, she would lose it.

Marcus routed $300,000 into Vivienne’s trust so she could buy out the mortgage without creating another visible Cross Strategic transaction.

Vivienne knew the money came indirectly from Ravello contracts.

She told herself it was temporary.

Another reasonable beginning.

Another line crossed.

Dominic looked at her.

“So when Elena discovered the invoices…”

Vivienne’s eyes filled.

“She wasn't only threatening Marcus.”

“She threatened what you protected.”

“Yes.”

That did not excuse anything.

It did explain why Vivienne’s loyalty hardened.

Home.

Mother.

Brother.

Security.

Then status.

Then Dominic.

Then jealousy.

One compromise built the next.

Vivienne whispered:

“I hated Elena because she was right about me before I was ready to know it.”

Dominic said nothing.

She looked toward the repaired dress.

“She trusted me more than I deserved.”

“Yes.”

Her mouth trembled.

Dominic did not soften the answer.

Then came accountability.

The engagement ended formally.

Vivienne left the residence.

Her access to Aria was terminated pending professional child-safety review.

Marcus was removed from every Ravello contract and operational role.

The financial misconduct went to outside counsel and forensic accountants.

Dominic did not authorize private retaliation.

He did not erase his own assault at the garden party either.

Video showed Vivienne lunging toward Aria and Marcus attacking Dominic.

It also showed Dominic striking both.

His attorneys handled the matter through normal legal channels.

Dominic accepted the outcome rather than making calls.

That surprised more people than anything else.

Rosa stayed.

Aria began seeing a child therapist.

For several weeks, she asked whether Vivienne was coming back.

Not because she wanted her.

Because children needed to know where danger was.

Dominic answered the same way each time.

“No.”

One evening Rosa repaired the last loose seam of Elena’s dress.

Something fell from the hem.

Not another memory card.

A tiny brass key.

Dominic recognized the number stamped into it.

A private safe-deposit service Elena had used before they married.

The account still existed.

The box had never been opened after her death.

Dominic went with his attorney.

Inside were copies of the same financial records.

A photograph of Aria as a baby.

And one sealed envelope.

DOMINIC.

His hands stopped.

Vivienne had destroyed one letter.

May you like

Elena had prepared another.

This one had never passed through anyone else’s hands.
