Chapter 11

Dominic turned away.
His hands stayed open.
That took effort.
The garden lights blurred for a moment.
Elena had not abandoned him.
She had not decided the marriage was over.
She had been waiting to see whether he could choose differently.
Then she died before the choice reached him.
Vivienne had hidden that.
Marcus had created the lie that made the choice necessary.
Dominic had supplied the temperament that made everyone afraid to tell him anything.
Three betrayals.
Different sizes.
Different responsibility.
All real.
Marcus finally spoke.
His voice had lost its arrogance.
“I didn't cause the accident.”
Dominic looked at him.
“I know.”
Marcus blinked.
“You know?”
“I’m not going to invent a murder because hatred would be easier with one.”
Vivienne stared at him.
Dominic continued.
“Elena’s accident was investigated.”
Rain.
A slick highway.
No tampering.
No second vehicle.
No evidence anyone caused it.
Marcus looked down.
Dominic’s voice hardened.
“That does not make you innocent.”
“No.”
The answer surprised him.
Marcus’s fingers tightened around his watch.
“I know.”
For once, no argument followed.
Then Dominic asked:
“Why keep the recording?”
Vivienne looked at Marcus.
He answered.
“Because she needed protection from me.”
Vivienne’s face tightened.
Marcus continued.
“She told me if I ever tried to destroy the file, she would give it to Dominic.”
Dominic looked between them.
“So you blackmailed each other.”
Vivienne’s voice shook.
“Yes.”
The siblings had spent eighteen months trapped inside the same secret.
Marcus needed Vivienne silent.
Vivienne needed Marcus financially stable enough that the scandal stayed buried.
Each believed the other could ruin their life.
Neither could walk away cleanly.
That toxic balance explained their loyalty.
And their cruelty.
Then Rosa approached.
She had been repairing Elena’s dress.
“There is something else.”
Every face turned.
Dominic’s breathing changed.
Rosa held the inner waist seam open.
“The memory card wasn't the only thing.”
Inside was a thin strip of fabric with handwriting stitched beneath clear protective cloth.
Elena’s handwriting.
Not hidden for adults.
Placed where someday Aria might find it when the dress was altered.
Three short lines:
For Aria.
The ring is yours.
No one gets to make you forget me to make themselves comfortable.
Dominic closed his eyes.
Vivienne began crying again.
Because the sentence named exactly what she had done.
Then Rosa turned the fabric over.
A final line appeared on the back.
If Dominic is reading this, ask him whether he finally moved the meetings out of our house.
Dominic opened his eyes.

Even from the past, Elena was still asking the same question.
And this time, he had no excuse for avoiding the answer.
