Chapter 11

Luca came to me three days later.
Alone.
That meant the truth had traveled.
Fast.
He entered the atelier after closing and stared at the black room door.
“You showed them.”
“Yes.”
“You embarrassed my father.”
“No.”
His eyes sharpened.
“I honored him.”
That made him angry.
“He gave away Valenti territory.”
“He saved you.”
“I didn’t ask.”
There.
The child inside the capo.
Still furious that love created debt.
I understood it better than I wanted to.
“My father made choices for me too.”
Luca laughed.
“Don’t compare us.”
“I’m not.”
I stepped closer.
“I learned eventually that being protected doesn’t automatically make the protection right.”
He looked surprised.
Good.
“Your father had the right to choose his territory.”
Silence.
“And you had the right to hate what his choice cost you.”
I touched the ledger.
“What you didn’t have was the right to rewrite it into theft and use the lie to justify taking from everyone else.”
His jaw tightened.
Then he asked:
“Did Valeria tell you I loved her?”
Interesting.
“No.”
He smiled without humor.
“I did.”
Of course.
Another layer.
Real feelings.
Wrong actions.
Again.
He had kissed her because the relationship was not merely operational.
“How long?”
“Before you.”
That surprised me.
Valeria and Luca had been involved briefly years earlier.
Her family ended it because Valenti power was unstable.
Then Lucian later positioned her near me.
Luca returned once the engagement became useful.
Old love became alliance.
Alliance became affair.
Messy.
Human.
Dangerous.
“Did she love you?”
Luca looked toward the floor.
“Not anymore.”
Good answer.
Maybe the first honest one.
He looked at me.
“So what now?”
“No eastern corridor.”
His face hardened.
“No marriage leverage.”
Harder.
“No war unless you start one.”
He laughed.
“You think truth makes you merciful?”
“No.”
I spoke quietly.
“I think making you live after the story stopped protecting you is enough.”
He understood.
Reputation would change.
Not collapse.
But change.
Men would know his father sacrificed territory for him.
Some would call that love.
Some weakness.
May you like
Luca could no longer control which.
For a man obsessed with narrative, that was punishment enough.
