Chapter 14

Valeria stayed away for five months.

Then she sent one letter.

Not to me.

To Margaret.

My mother read it privately.

She did not show me until a week later.

That mattered.

It was hers.

When she finally handed it over, Valeria did not ask forgiveness.

She apologized specifically for the shove.

For grabbing the handbag.

For using Ava as pressure.

For allowing Luca to speak about household access as though my daughter were part of a plan.

Then one line:

I attacked you because I thought destroying the photograph could still save the future I wanted.

Margaret underlined it.

“She understands something.”

“What?”

“That she wasn’t protecting us.”

I nodded.

She was protecting the version of herself that still became my wife.

Self-preservation dressed as love.

Human.

Still wrong.

Valeria moved away from her brother.

Lucian hated that.

Their family fractured.

Not because I attacked it.

Because without my marriage as a shared project, the siblings had to look at what they actually wanted from each other.

Lucian wanted influence.

Valeria wanted independence.

Those had never been the same thing.

She eventually gave Luca back every gift he had sent over the years.

He returned nothing.

Predictable.

Margaret asked whether I missed her.

“Yes.”

She seemed surprised.

“You can miss someone and still know they cannot come back.”

My mother smiled.

“You finally sound your age.”

“Which age?”

“Older than Ava.”

Fair.

The photograph stayed inside my desk.

Not displayed.

Not destroyed.

Evidence becomes dangerous when it turns into shrine.

I kept it because Ava’s future had once been discussed beside that limousine.

One day the picture might matter to her.

Or not.

That choice could wait.

For now, I preferred another photograph.

Ava and Margaret at the atelier after repairs.

My daughter standing on a tasting stool, holding six scent blotters like a fan.

My mother laughing.

No Valeria.

No Luca.

May you like

No fear.

Just the people who remained after the plan failed.
