Chapter 12

Ava asked where Valeria was.
I knew it would happen.
Children do not stop loving someone because adults uncover conspiracy.
“She doesn’t live with us anymore.”
“Why?”
We sat in my mother’s kitchen.
Margaret was making tea.
Ava swung her feet beneath the chair.
“Because she hurt Grandma.”
Ava nodded.
“And?”
Because children always know when adults simplify too much.
“She lied to me.”
“What lie?”
“Big grown-up lies.”
She frowned.
“About kissing bad man?”
Margaret nearly dropped the teacup.
I looked at my daughter.
“You remember that?”
“Grandma picture.”
Of course.
Children remember the thing everyone hoped they missed.
“Yes.”
“Is kissing bad?”
“No.”
Important.
“Kissing someone while you promised to marry somebody else can hurt people.”
She considered that.
Then:
“Valeria hurt me?”
I breathed carefully.
“She grabbed you.”
Ava nodded.
“Arm hurt.”
My jaw tightened.
I had seen it.
Still hated myself for letting Valeria get close enough.
“Do you want to see her someday?”
Margaret looked at me.
I ignored it.
Ava thought.
“No.”
“Okay.”
“Maybe later.”
“Okay.”
Choice.
Not a permanent sentence demanded from a three-year-old.
Margaret waited until Ava left the room.
Then she looked at me.
“You surprised me.”
“Why?”
“You used to decide family access yourself.”
Fair.
“I’m learning.”
She smiled faintly.
“So am I.”
Then I remembered her airport decision.
Following Valeria.
Taking the picture.
Not calling me immediately.
“Why didn’t you tell me before coming here?”
Her face changed.
There.
She knew.
“I wanted proof.”
“You had the photograph.”
“I wanted to confront her first.”
“Why?”
Margaret looked away.
“I was afraid you’d think I was interfering.”
I understood.
Valeria had spent months telling me Margaret was suspicious of her.
Too involved.
Old-fashioned.
I had defended Valeria.
My mother had learned to doubt whether I would listen.
That was on me.
“You should have called.”
“Yes.”
“I should have made you believe you could.”
She looked at me.
“Yes.”
No comforting lie.

Good.
Families improve when apologies stop requiring immediate rescue.
