Chapter 10

Breaking me did not mean killing me.

Eleanor considered death wasteful.

She wanted me dependent.

The videos were step one.

Create an internal story that Serena neglected her son.

Step two:

Force me to accept the Mercy Table as a “support structure.”

They would help manage Arthur.

Help manage donors.

Help manage family opinion.

Every problem they created would be solved by the institution they wanted restored.

Elegant.

Then step three:

Russell becomes chair of the revived advisory council.

Doreen becomes Arthur’s household guardian during my travel.

Eleanor remains invisible.

The old matriarch returning without returning.

I looked at Russell.

He went pale.

“You knew?”

“No.”

I believed him.

He thought he would gain power.

He did not realize he would become Eleanor’s public face.

I looked at Doreen.

She knew more.

Not all.

“Mother?”

Doreen started crying.

Eleanor looked at her with irritation.

Not concern.

That told me enough about their relationship.

Doreen had spent sixty-four years trying to earn approval from a woman who converted affection into assignments.

Then repeated the same method with Arthur.

Pain travels downward when nobody names it.

Not excuse.

Context.

I asked Eleanor:

“Why did you need me dependent?”

“Because you refuse counsel.”

“No.”

I leaned forward.

“I refuse purchased counsel.”

She smiled.

“Everything is purchased.”

There it was.

Her worldview.

Money buys access.

Need buys obedience.

Love buys loyalty.

Children buy sympathy.

Nothing simply given.

I thought about Arthur clutching bread without eating.

Eleanor’s philosophy in miniature.

Even food had become transactional.

I stood.

“The Mercy Table ends.”

Several donors protested.

I raised one hand.

“No purchased seats.”

Then:

“Actual relief stays.”

Different.

The families receiving support would not lose food, rent, medicine, or schooling because wealthy men behaved badly.

But donor money would no longer buy private influence.

Eleanor laughed.

“You’ll starve your own system.”

“Then I’ll fund it myself until it learns to stand without extortion.”

She stared.

That was the one thing she never understood.

May you like

Help that does not create debt.

To her, that was wasted power.
