Chapter 7

Eleanor Lockwood was eighty-four.

Alive.

Living under the name Eleanor Shaw at a family property in Rhode Island.

My father told me she died after a stroke.

Why?

Because he exiled her.

Not buried her.

Doreen had kept contact.

Russell had known for three years.

I had known nothing.

That was intentional.

Eleanor once controlled the old Patron Circle.

Not my father.

Her.

She built it during years when Lockwood leadership changed hands repeatedly.

Widows and children became her public image.

Donors became her private army.

My father eventually discovered the system.

He shut it down.

When she refused to surrender donor influence, he sent her away and told the younger generation she was dead.

Extreme.

Effective.

Cowardly.

Another family lie.

I stared at Doreen.

“You rebuilt your mother’s system.”

She cried.

“She understood loyalty.”

“She exploited suffering.”

“She kept families fed.”

“With conditions?”

Silence.

That answer mattered.

Eleanor’s aid always came with relationships attached.

A widow receiving rent support might be asked to persuade her brother.

A child receiving tuition might appear at donor dinners.

A retired capo receiving medical care might owe a vote.

Help converted into debt.

I had dismantled the modern remnants without ever knowing the architect.

Russell looked genuinely shaken.

“You said Grandmother only advised.”

Doreen looked at him.

“She did.”

“Did she know Arthur was the boy?”

No answer.

My brother stood.

“You told me she didn’t.”

Interesting.

Doreen had lied downward too.

Russell thought he was rebuilding a donor council with his mother.

Doreen was taking instructions from Eleanor.

How far?

I opened her messages.

No Eleanor.

Deleted.

Then Rafe entered carrying something from Doreen’s car.

A second phone.

Old.

Simple.

One contact.

MOTHER.

The latest message:

Keep Serena angry at Russell. Angry people look sideways, not upward.

I read it twice.

Clever.

Eleanor expected me to discover the videos.

Expected Russell to become the obvious villain.

Meaning tonight had not gone wrong.

May you like

Not yet.

We were still inside her plan.
