Chapter 15

Arthur turned four.

We held a small birthday dinner.

No donors.

No capos.

No fundraising.

Cake.

Balloons.

Too many toy cars.

Russell was not invited.

Doreen was.

Because Arthur said yes.

She arrived carrying nothing.

Smart.

Arthur looked at her.

“Gift?”

I almost laughed.

Doreen did too.

“I can bring one later.”

“No.”

Arthur frowned.

“Now.”

Four-year-old boundaries are brutally inconsistent.

She gave him twenty dollars from her purse.

I intervened.

“Absolutely not.”

Arthur complained.

Normal.

Beautiful.

Later, Doreen found soot on a craft table because one of the children had been drawing with charcoal sticks.

She froze.

I noticed.

So did Arthur.

He picked up a black stick.

Doreen’s face went pale.

Arthur drew a line across paper.

Then another.

Nothing happened.

Just charcoal.

Not humiliation.

Not fundraising.

An ordinary art supply.

Doreen started crying quietly.

Arthur looked confused.

“Grandma sad?”

“A little.”

“Why?”

She answered honestly.

“Because I remembered something mean I did.”

Arthur thought.

“Don’t.”

“I won’t.”

Then he handed her a red crayon.

That was all.

No forgiveness declaration.

No speech.

Children often solve symbolic objects by simply using them for what they are.

I learned from him.
