Chapter 3

The room was beneath the lake house.

Not the main cellar.

Lower.

Behind a wine rack I had walked past a hundred times.

My father designed hidden spaces like other men collected watches.

I hated him for that after he died.

Secrets become chores when the person who created them is gone.

The brass key opened a narrow steel door.

Inside was no money.

No weapons.

One chair.

One table.

A tape recorder.

And six black cases.

I looked at Elias.

“You’ve been here?”

“No.”

“Victoria?”

Silence.

She had.

That interested me.

“How?”

Her father.

Victor Hale.

Dead three years.

Apparently he knew about the room.

My father and Victor had once been closer than I understood.

Business allies.

Almost brothers.

Then something happened fifteen years earlier.

After that, they barely spoke.

I never knew why.

The first black case contained photographs.

My father.

Victor Hale.

Elias’s father, Andrew Waverly.

Three men standing at a marina warehouse.

The second case held cassette tapes.

The third, family signet molds.

The fourth, old maps.

The fifth, a single silver ring.

The sixth—

Empty.

That was the one Victoria stared at.

I noticed.

“What was inside?”

She said nothing.

I opened the tape recorder.

One cassette already waited inside.

My father’s handwriting:

DOMINIC — ONLY IF THE DOG OUTLIVES ME.

Despite everything, I almost laughed.

That sounded like him.

I pressed play.

Static.

Then his voice.

“If you’re hearing this, Bruno was smarter than most of us.”

I closed my eyes.

Seven years disappeared.

My father continued.

“Do not trust the empty case.”

I opened my eyes.

Victoria went pale.

Interesting.

“The thing that matters was removed before I sealed this room.”

Pause.

“I let the thief believe I never noticed.”

My pulse slowed.

Then:

“If Victor Hale’s family comes back close to ours, ask why.”

Victoria stood.

I looked at her.

My father’s voice continued.

“And if Andrew’s son Elias is still beside you, ask him what his father died protecting.”

Silence.

Elias stopped breathing.

Two dead fathers.

One empty case.

One engagement.

May you like

And suddenly I understood that Victoria had not entered my life carrying only her own secrets.

She had inherited someone else’s unfinished theft.
