Chapter 5

Victoria insisted she loved me.

I believed her.

That made everything uglier.

People imagine betrayal requires false affection.

Sometimes affection is real.

So is ambition.

“What did marrying me give you?”

She wiped tears away.

“Home.”

“Not enough.”

She looked at the floor.

“Protection.”

“From whom?”

“The Hale family.”

Interesting.

Victor’s death had left debt inside his branch.

Not financial.

Loyalty.

Old captains who believed the Hales had been humiliated when my father dismantled the coalition.

Victoria inherited their grievance without wanting their methods.

At first.

Then they began pressuring her.

Restore the family name.

Recover Victor’s place.

Do not let Hale become decorative.

She met me a year later.

Maybe by accident.

Maybe not.

She claimed accident.

I believed she believed that too.

Then Elias learned who she was.

He approached her.

Showed her fragments of the old story.

Told her about the second signet.

Together they built a plan.

Marriage first.

Ring second.

Coalition third.

No war.

No blood.

Just enough symbolic legitimacy to make my decisions negotiable.

“What did Maya threaten?”

Victoria answered.

“The timeline.”

Not the plan itself.

If I discovered the collar key before marriage, everything died.

Maya saw the cut seam.

Asked the wrong question.

Victoria panicked.

Bound her.

Then Bruno freed her.

I looked toward the old dog sleeping beside the table upstairs.

A German shepherd had dismantled a fifteen-year political plan by chewing rope.

My father would have loved that.

Then I asked the question Victoria had avoided.

“Where is the duplicate ring?”

She looked at Elias.

He whispered:

“Bruno’s collar wasn’t hiding only the key.”

My attention sharpened.

“What else?”

“Your father moved the ring.”

“When?”

“Before he died.”

“Where?”

Elias looked almost ashamed.

“We think he put it inside Bruno’s collar too.”

I laughed once.

Impossible.

I had just searched it.

Then Maya spoke from the doorway.

“No.”

We all turned.

She held Bruno’s old leather collar.

“The lining has two layers.”

She pressed one section.

May you like

A faint hard circle moved beneath the leather.

Victoria’s entire engagement plan had been sitting around my dog’s neck the whole night.
