Chapter 11

Adrian’s defense shifted immediately.
He stopped claiming Mara had cheated.
There was too much evidence.
Instead, his attorneys argued that Adrian believed Mara had given verbal permission to use donor material.
Mara laughed when Rebecca read it.
“I gave permission without knowing his diagnosis, without choosing a donor, without signing anything, without being told afterward?”
Rebecca nodded.
“That is their position.”
Denise Warren rejected it.
She admitted she relied improperly on Adrian’s representation that Mara knew.
She also admitted the clinic should never have proceeded without direct documented consent from the patient.
Her cooperation became central to the regulatory case.
Lakeview notified its insurer.
An independent medical review began.
Denise surrendered relevant records and accepted professional scrutiny.
No one pretended she had merely been fooled.
She had bypassed a safeguard.
Adrian exploited it.
Both things mattered.
The legal parentage question produced an unexpected reversal.
Adrian’s attorney initially suggested that because he was not the genetic father, future child-support and parental obligations required “careful determination.”
Rebecca nearly laughed.
Then she sent back copies of Adrian’s own fertility authorization.
He had intentionally arranged the conception.
He had acted as the intended father throughout the pregnancy.
He had paid medical bills.
Attended early appointments.
Announced the child as his.
Placed the baby on insurance paperwork.
Under the applicable assisted-reproduction and parentage principles being argued in the case, genetic non-paternity did not automatically allow a spouse who intentionally caused a donor conception to simply walk away from legal parentage.
Adrian had spent months preparing to use genetics as a weapon.
His own signed authorization now worked against him.
Massimo heard the summary and smiled for the first time in weeks.
Claire pointed at him.
“Do not enjoy family law.”
“I’m enjoying paperwork.”
“That is worse.”
Still, the court had difficult questions.
Adrian had participated in the conception.
He was also accused of serious deception against Mara.
He had physically abandoned her during a medical scare.
His mistress had helped prepare a false narrative.
Legal fatherhood did not automatically mean unrestricted access.
Family court ordered a full evaluation after birth.
No assumptions.
No punishment through the child.
Mara supported that approach.
Massimo struggled with it.
“You want him near this baby?”
“I want professionals to decide what is safe.”
“He did this.”
“I know.”
“He used the baby before the baby was born.”
“I know.”
Massimo stared at his daughter.
Mara’s voice stayed calm.
“I am not going to copy Adrian and decide parentage based on what makes me feel powerful.”
That ended the argument.

Massimo hated how proud he was of her.
He also hated that she was right.
