Chapter 6

Denise Warren agreed to preserve records.

She did not yet agree to an interview.

Her attorney sent a letter saying she had acted under physician-approved clinic procedures and denied knowingly participating in fraud.

That wording mattered.

Knowingly.

Rebecca requested the archived consent packet from Lakeview.

The clinic produced twenty-three pages.

Mara read every one.

Medication consent.

Procedure consent.

Storage instructions.

Financial acknowledgments.

Genetic screening.

Privacy forms.

One page number was missing.

Page seventeen.

The clinic’s digital index listed it as:

Supplemental reproductive-material authorization.

The document itself was absent.

Mara stared at Rebecca.

“Convenient.”

“Very.”

The clinic had migrated systems the previous year.

Some scans were missing.

That was possible.

But a printed billing summary referenced the missing form number.

Adrian’s initials appeared beside it.

Mara’s did not.

Rebecca asked the clinic:

“Can one spouse authorize reproductive material without the patient carrying the pregnancy?”

The medical director became uncomfortable.

“Not in the way you’re implying.”

“What way am I implying?”

The interview ended shortly afterward.

Massimo received only the summary Mara permitted.

He did not need more to understand the direction.

Adrian had signed something involving reproductive material.

Mara had not.

The pregnancy resulted from that treatment cycle.

Then Adrian secretly ordered paternity testing weeks later.

The logic was disturbing.

If he genuinely suspected Mara of cheating, why would he suspect it immediately after a clinic-assisted conception?

That was clue number three.

The paternity test made more sense if Adrian already expected not to match.

Claire found another piece in Sienna’s financial records through civil discovery related to the mountain incident and disputed property.

Three months earlier, Sienna paid a private document-storage company.

The stored file box was registered under her name.

Description:

Holt personal legal records.

Her attorney objected to broad inspection.

The court limited the request.

The contents were not automatically available.

But metadata showed one file had been scanned.

Title:

N.S. Paternity Report.

North Shore.

Sienna had possessed a copy of Adrian’s paternity result before Mara knew the test existed.

When confronted through counsel, Sienna admitted Adrian showed it to her after they became involved.

Her explanation:

“He told me Mara had cheated.”

Mara read the statement.

“And she believed him?”

Rebecca shrugged.

“People believe the story that makes their affair easier to justify.”

Sienna claimed Adrian told her the pregnancy resulted from Mara seeing another man during fertility treatment.

No evidence supported that.

Mara had work calendars.

Phone records.

Clinic appointments.

Nothing suggesting a secret relationship.

More importantly, Adrian had not confronted her.

He had not demanded answers.

He had not asked for another test.

He had quietly kept the result.

Started moving assets.

Then started seeing Sienna.

Mara looked at her father that evening.

“He wasn’t heartbroken.”

Massimo did not answer.

“He was prepared.”

May you like

“Yes.”

That difference mattered.
