Chapter 7

Adrian made one mistake in writing.
Not a confession.
Something more useful.
A message to Sienna six weeks before the mountain incident.
Do not mention the clinic. If this ends, it ends on paternity.
Sienna replied:
What if she tells them about treatment?
Adrian:
She doesn’t know enough to help herself.
Massimo read the recovered exchange through Claire.
His expression became cold.
Mara sat across from him.
“She doesn’t know enough.”
Claire nodded.
“That line is going to matter.”
Adrian was treating Mara’s ignorance as an asset.
The message did not prove how the baby was conceived.
It proved he believed the fertility treatment contained facts Mara did not know.
Then investigators found a draft public statement on Sienna’s laptop.
It had never been released.
After discovering that his wife’s pregnancy could not biologically be his, Mr. Holt privately attempted to preserve the marriage and protect the Valenti family from unnecessary embarrassment.
Mara laughed once.
“Protect us.”
The draft continued.
It portrayed Adrian as a betrayed husband who remained silent for months out of compassion.
It referred vaguely to “evidence of reproductive deception.”
No mention of him ordering the test at thirteen weeks.
No mention of his secret medical consultation.
No mention of the missing clinic consent page.
No mention of Denise Warren.
The narrative was ready.
Only timing remained.
Claire looked at Massimo.
“This was not just for divorce court.”
“What else?”
“Business reputation.”
Adrian expected the Valenti lender to review his credit facility soon.
If the marriage collapsed because he abandoned pregnant Mara for a mistress, his relationship with Valenti-affiliated businesses became unstable.
If instead Mara had deceived him about fathering another man’s child, Adrian could argue any financial pressure from Massimo was vindictive retaliation against an innocent spouse.
It would not guarantee loan renewal.
It would complicate the optics.
Adrian wanted leverage.
Not necessarily legal victory.
Enough uncertainty to make everyone negotiate.
The mountain road ruined his control of the sequence.
Mara was supposed to go to the hospital alone.
Sienna was supposed to leave with Adrian.
The public separation would begin.
Then, according to another draft email, Adrian planned to serve Mara with paternity-related demands three days later.
Instead, Massimo found Mara first.
And said the one sentence Adrian did not expect him to know.
The baby might not be yours.
That explained the fear.
Adrian did not think Massimo was making an accusation.
He realized somebody had uncovered the test.
Mara asked:
“Who sent the report to Dad?”
Nobody knew.
That remained a factual question.
Claire warned them not to turn it into another conspiracy.
The sender might be a frightened clinic employee.
A lawyer.
Someone from Adrian’s office.
Even Denise.
They would investigate if the evidence mattered.
It did not need to become a second mystery controlling the story.
Then Denise Warren’s attorney called.
“She’ll speak.”
Rebecca asked when.
“Tomorrow.”
The meeting lasted ninety minutes.
Massimo was not permitted inside.
Mara was.
She emerged pale.
Her hands shook.
Massimo stood.
“What happened?”
Mara looked at him.
May you like
“Denise says Adrian lied to me before I ever got pregnant.”
That was all she could say before sitting down.
