Chapter 12

We went through Margaret’s blue drawer ourselves.

Not to build a case.

To understand how much she had hidden.

Four clinic letters from Dr. Pierce.

Two rehabilitation schedules.

A school note asking why Emily remained absent when her physician had cleared her.

Every piece had been intercepted.

Then one envelope from Sarah’s mother.

Emily’s other grandmother.

I stared at it.

Margaret had told me Linda—Sarah’s mother—wanted nothing to do with the Warren family after the funeral.

The letter said the opposite.

Caleb,

Please let me see Emily. I know you’re grieving. I am too. I don’t want to fight you. I only want my granddaughter to know Sarah’s family still exists.

I sat down.

Another relationship edited.

Another woman kept away because Margaret decided divided loyalties were dangerous.

Emily found me holding the letter.

“Who wrote?”

“Grandma Linda.”

She frowned.

“I have another grandma?”

That sentence hurt more than any threat I had heard in thirty-one years.

“Yes.”

“Why never meet?”

I looked at the drawer.

“Because I believed something that wasn’t true.”

She thought about it.

“Can we meet now?”

“Yes.”

Linda arrived two days later.

She cried before reaching the porch.

Emily stood behind me at first.

Then noticed Linda was holding one object.

A photograph of Sarah at eight years old.

Same crooked smile.

Same stubborn eyebrows.

Emily stepped forward.

“That’s Mom?”

“Yes.”

Within ten minutes they were sitting together.

No grand miracle.

Just stories.

Sarah hated peas.

Sarah broke her arm climbing a tree.

Sarah once cut her own bangs and blamed the dog.

Emily laughed.

I listened.

Margaret had not only chained my daughter’s body.

She had narrowed her history until Warren was the only family left.

Opening that drawer gave Emily part of her mother back.
