Chapter 13

Margaret asked to see me alone.

I refused.

Rafe stayed.

So did Linda.

No more private versions.

My mother hated that.

“You’re humiliating me.”

“No.”

I looked around the farmhouse kitchen.

“I’m removing the place where you control the story.”

Margaret’s mouth tightened.

She turned toward Linda.

“Sarah filled his head against me.”

Linda answered calmly.

“Sarah is dead.”

That stopped her.

Margaret tried another direction.

“Emily needs structure.”

Linda looked toward the stairs.

“She needed air.”

Silence.

My mother’s face changed.

Then she looked at me.

“You think I enjoyed any of this?”

“No.”

That was true.

Margaret did not wake up excited to hurt people.

She believed suffering became acceptable if it produced obedience.

That belief was more dangerous than enjoyment.

“You always were difficult,” she said.

I almost smiled.

“There it is.”

She frowned.

“You think control is something other people force you to use.”

Her eyes hardened.

“I kept this family alive.”

“Yes.”

I leaned forward.

“And eventually you forgot the family was supposed to contain people.”

She looked wounded.

Good.

Not because I wanted pain.

Because truth should reach the part of a person excuses protect.

Then she whispered:

“I lost your father.”

I went still.

There was the origin.

My father died when I was nineteen.

Afterward Margaret held the Warren organization together until I took the chair.

She survived by controlling variables.

Schedules.

Men.

Money.

Children.

Everything unpredictable became a threat.

“I couldn’t lose you too,” she said.

I understood.

I did not forgive.

“So you made sure I could never leave.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“Yes.”

Honest.

Finally.

“And when Sarah tried to take me somewhere you couldn’t control?”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“I panicked.”

“That panic killed years of our lives.”

She nodded.

No defense.

Emily did not see Margaret that day.

That choice belonged to Emily later.

Not to guilt.

May you like

Not to tradition.

Not to me.
