Chapter 7

The recording did not end there.

Sarah sounded more frightened.

“There’s one thing I haven’t told you.”

I forced myself to listen.

“Emily saw Margaret in the garage.”

Rafe looked at me.

I looked toward the empty shelf.

Sarah continued.

My mother had entered their garage after the argument.

Emily saw her carrying Sarah’s travel bag.

Nothing violent.

Nothing obviously dangerous.

But inside that bag was the wooden swallow.

Margaret knew.

“She tried to take it,” Sarah said.

“I got it back.”

That explained everything after the crash.

Margaret knew the bird contained something.

She just did not know where Sarah put it before driving away.

Then Sarah said:

“If the crash happens before I reach you, don’t let them tell Emily she imagined what she saw.”

I stopped the recorder.

Could not breathe for several seconds.

Not because Sarah predicted the crash.

Because she feared something would happen.

“What did she think Margaret would do?”

Rafe shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

I played the rest.

Sarah clarified.

Margaret had threatened to have one of the drivers block the road and bring them back to the estate if Sarah left.

Not hurt them.

Stop them.

Force a conversation.

Family leverage.

Again.

Sarah believed the men might frighten Emily or create an accident.

The recording ended with:

“I’m taking the county road instead.”

I looked at Rafe.

“Was the crash on the county road?”

He nodded.

My stomach turned.

“Were Warren men there?”

Rafe looked sick.

“One.”

“Who?”

“Dean Mercer.”

Former driver.

Dead six months.

Conveniently.

“What was he doing?”

Rafe hesitated.

“Following.”

At Margaret’s order.

I stood.

Sarah’s crash was officially blamed on weather and speed.

Maybe that remained true.

But she had been followed by a Warren driver because my mother refused to let her leave freely.

That changed the moral shape even if it did not prove direct cause.

I looked at the recorder.

Then at Rafe.

“Did Dean ever tell you what happened?”

“Yes.”

My voice became quiet.

“And you never told me.”

Rafe closed his eyes.

“He said Sarah saw him behind her and accelerated.”

The room went cold.

My mother had not ordered anyone to kill Sarah.

May you like

She had ordered fear onto the road.

And fear did the rest.
