Chapter 1

Dante ended the engagement celebration before anyone touched the cake.
“Guests leave. Staff stays available.”
The music stopped.
Bodyguards opened the conservatory doors while confused relatives and business associates were quietly directed toward the main entrance.
Nobody argued.
Dante barely noticed them.
His attention remained on Elena.
She was sitting on an upholstered bench with a physician who had been attending the party as a guest.
One hand rested beneath her belly.
Her breathing had steadied.
The doctor looked at Dante.
“She’s frightened and her blood pressure is elevated. I want her obstetrician contacted.”
“Hospital?”
“Not automatically. She isn’t bleeding, and she says the pain has stopped.”
Elena immediately said, “I’m fine.”
Dante looked at her.
“You doubled over.”
“Because Preston grabbed me.”
“That doesn’t make you fine.”
She flinched at his tone.
Dante caught himself.
He lowered his voice.
“Sorry.”
That single word seemed to surprise her.
The doctor continued checking her while Dante stood several feet away.
He did not touch Elena.
He did not touch her belly.
He did not ask whether he could.
Six months.
He kept hearing the number.
Six months.
The date on the scorched ultrasound fragment matched a period he remembered too clearly.
Before Victoria.
Before the engagement.
Before Elena had abruptly disappeared from his life without explanation.
Dante had spent months telling himself she had made a choice.
Apparently she had been carrying something he never knew existed.
Across the conservatory, Preston was being examined by another doctor.
His face had begun swelling.
Victoria sat in a separate room with her attorney on the way.
Dante’s outside counsel, Claire Donovan, arrived within forty minutes.
She looked first at Elena.
Then at the collapsed easels.
Then at the destroyed engagement gifts.
“Tell me nobody is dead.”
“Nobody is dead.”
“Excellent. We’re outperforming expectations.”
Dante gave her a look.
Claire did not care.
She listened to the sequence.
Elena burned the ultrasound.
Victoria confronted her.
Preston tried to remove her.
Dante intervened.
Preston swung.
Dante struck him.
Victoria grabbed Elena.
Dante struck Victoria.
Claire’s expression changed at the last part.
“You understand your use of force is going to be reviewed too.”
“Yes.”
“You do not get a morality exemption because they were behaving badly.”
“I know.”
Good.
Claire turned toward Elena.
“Do you want your own attorney?”
Elena looked startled.
“For what?”
“Because everybody in this building has money, power, or both, and you are pregnant in the middle of whatever this is.”
Elena glanced at Dante.
“I don’t want his lawyer.”
“She is my lawyer.”
Claire nodded.
“And that is exactly why I’m recommending another one for you.”
Dante agreed immediately.
Elena seemed surprised again.
“You’re not going to argue?”
“No.”
She looked away.
Something in that reaction bothered him.
As though she expected him to control the room even when the control was against her.
When the doctor finished, Elena finally accepted a call to her obstetric practice.
She was advised to go in for evaluation because of the stress and abdominal pain.
Dante asked, “Can I take you?”
“No.”
The answer came quickly.
He accepted it.
“I’ll have a driver.”
“I can get a car.”
“You can.”
He paused.
“But let security escort you until we know why Preston was trying to drag you out.”
That she accepted.
Before leaving, Elena looked toward the ashes in the fireplace.
Dante still held the scorched ultrasound fragment.
He handed it back.
She took it carefully.
For a moment neither spoke.
Then Dante asked the only question he could ask without demanding her whole life at once.
“Did you try to tell me?”
Elena stared at him.
Her eyes filled.
“Three times.”
Dante went still.
“I never heard from you.”
“I know.”
“How?”
She reached into her handbag.
From an inside pocket, she removed a folded letter.
The paper carried the Caradonna family-office letterhead.
She handed it to him.
Dante opened it.
The message was short.
Mr. Caradonna has been informed of your pregnancy. He does not wish to reopen personal contact. Medical and living support will be arranged provided his privacy is respected. Direct approaches to Mr. Caradonna or his household are not welcome.
At the bottom was a digital authorization mark.
His initials.
D.C.
Dante read the page twice.
Then looked at Elena.
“I never wrote this.”
Her face changed.
“What?”
“I never saw it.”
She stared at him.
Dante looked toward the room where Victoria and Preston were being kept apart.

The pregnancy was no longer the only secret in the house.
Somebody had been speaking in his name.
