Chapter 8

Claire gave Dante one final chance to keep the matter contained.
Not buried.
Contained.
“You can cancel the Sloan investment privately.”
“I already intend to.”
“You can remove Preston from the joint venture.”
“Yes.”
“You can terminate Thomas’s remaining benefits and pursue civil recovery.”
“Yes.”
“You can handle Elena’s false communications through private litigation.”
Dante looked at her.
“And the forged corporate records?”
“That is the problem.”
The fake support trail touched joint-venture funds.
Executive authorization systems.
Lender-facing business records.
Potentially securities and bank representations depending on how Preston intended to use them.
If Dante reported everything, regulators, lenders, independent directors, and outside auditors could examine parts of the Caradonna business he preferred to keep private.
His personal relationship with Elena might become discoverable.
Her pregnancy might become part of corporate litigation.
His own oversight failures would be documented.
Claire continued.
“If you make the disclosure, you cannot control where it stops.”
Dante looked out the conference-room windows at downtown Chicago.
Preston had built a threat around secrecy.
The obvious response was more secrecy.
That would leave the weapon intact.
“What happens if I disclose Elena myself?”
Claire understood immediately.
“You mean to the board and lenders as a conflict matter.”
“Yes.”
“That neutralizes some reputational leverage.”
“Some.”
“It also puts the pregnancy into official records.”
“Only what is necessary.”
“Correct.”
Dante called Elena first.
He did not decide for her.
He explained the situation.
The false payment records could become evidence in a corporate investigation.
Her name could potentially appear in confidential filings.
She was quiet for a long time.
“You’re asking permission?”
“For anything beyond what counsel says I’m legally required to disclose, yes.”
Elena breathed out.
“Do it.”
“You’re sure?”
“I spent five months being hidden by people who said it was for my own good.”
That ended the question.
Dante made the irreversible choice.
Caradonna Holdings notified its independent directors that executive authorization systems had been misused to create false personal-support records.
The joint venture lender was informed.
The Mercer Tower investment was formally withdrawn pending investigation.
Preston lost emergency spending authority immediately.
Dante voluntarily recused himself from the internal review of his own private-office controls.
He also reported the suspected forged communications and misuse of funds to appropriate authorities through counsel.
The assault at the engagement reception remained separate.
Witness statements were preserved.
Video from the conservatory security system was turned over rather than disappearing into a Caradonna archive.
Several capos were furious.
One senior family associate came to Dante’s office.
“You gave outsiders video of you hitting a woman.”
“Yes.”
“Have you lost your mind?”
“No.”
“You could’ve handled all of this.”
“That sentence is why people thought they could handle Elena for me.”
The man stopped.
Dante continued.
“Preston’s entire leverage depends on everybody believing I’ll hide what makes me look bad.”
He pointed toward the door.
“I’m done helping him.”
The disclosure hit Sloan Development immediately.
Its lender froze discretionary draws.
Mercer Tower entered formal review.
Preston’s board demanded his temporary leave.
Victoria called Dante sixteen times that night.
He answered none.
Then one message arrived.
You have no idea what he built around you.
Dante read it twice.
Not we.
He.
May you like
For the first time, Victoria appeared to be separating herself from her brother.
Whether that was truth or survival remained unanswered.
