Chapter 7

Dante attended the prenatal appointment alone.

No bodyguards in the waiting room.

No entourage.

One security officer stayed downstairs because Elena agreed to that much.

Inside the examination room, Dante sat in an ordinary plastic chair.

Elena lay back while the technician positioned the monitor.

Then the heartbeat filled the room.

Fast.

Steady.

Alive.

Dante did not move.

Elena watched his face instead of the screen.

“You okay?”

“No.”

She almost smiled.

The technician continued the examination.

Everything appeared appropriate for the pregnancy stage.

They did not perform a prenatal paternity test.

Elena did not want an unnecessary medical procedure or additional stress.

Dante did not ask for one.

They both knew the timeline.

Legal confirmation could happen after birth if needed.

When the appointment ended, they sat in the hospital café.

Elena stirred tea she never drank.

“What happens to Victoria?”

“Whatever the evidence supports.”

“That sounds like Claire.”

“She’s contagious.”

Elena looked down.

“And Preston?”

“Same answer.”

“Are you going to kill him?”

Dante stared at her.

She immediately looked embarrassed.

“I shouldn’t have asked.”

“No.”

He leaned back.

“You should.”

Because that was the world she believed she had entered.

“No.”

Elena watched him.

“I hit him because he swung at me.”

“And Victoria?”

Dante’s expression changed.

“That was different.”

He did not hide behind Elena’s wrist.

“I saw her grab you and reacted physically. Whether that reaction was legally justified is for other people to evaluate.”

Elena studied him.

“You’re letting her press charges?”

“If she chooses.”

“Even after what she did?”

“One act doesn’t erase another.”

Elena looked surprised.

Dante understood the feeling.

People expected powerful men to believe consequences belonged mostly to enemies.

He was trying not to be that man.

Meanwhile, Victoria had moved out of the Caradonna estate.

Her engagement access ended.

Her ring had not been formally returned yet, but the wedding was suspended indefinitely.

Dante’s counsel advised him not to call it canceled until certain property and contractual issues were documented.

Emotionally, it was over.

Victoria knew.

She sent one text:

You’re destroying everything before you know the whole story.

Dante did not respond.

He preserved it.

Preston’s attorneys produced Mercer Tower records.

The project was worse than expected.

Without new capital, Sloan Development could face lender control within sixty days.

That gave Preston pressure.

Then Martin found an odd board memo.

Prepared by Sloan counsel.

Never distributed.

Title:

Executive Reputation Contingency — Caradonna Investment Delay.

The body had been deleted before completion.

Only the title remained in backup metadata.

Claire read it.

“Reputation contingency.”

Dante stared at the screen.

“You think it’s Elena.”

“I think we need the file.”

The forensic team recovered fragments.

Not enough to read the entire memo.

Enough to identify three referenced exhibits.

E.H. communications.

Executive support ledger.

Confidentiality draft.

Dante went completely still.

There it was.

The pregnancy files had been indexed inside a document about what Sloan would do if the Caradonna investment was delayed.

Elena had never been merely a romantic inconvenience.

She was attached to Preston’s business contingency plan.
