Chapter 11

I called my mother.

She answered on the third ring.

“Gavin?”

I could not speak immediately.

She heard the silence.

Then:

“Lucas?”

Thirty-two years old.

Head of the Whitlock organization.

Men crossed streets when I looked at them too long.

My mother said my name and I became twelve again.

“Yes.”

She started crying.

So did I.

Quietly.

No shame.

Ella climbed onto my lap because she saw my face.

I let her.

My mother asked:

“Is that Ella?”

My chest tightened.

“You know her?”

“Gavin showed me pictures.”

Of course.

Even while jealous, he had brought pieces of my life.

People are rarely only one thing.

I held the phone where Ella could hear.

“This is Grandma Margaret.”

Ella frowned.

“Grandma dead?”

Silence.

My mother heard.

I closed my eyes.

“No.”

“Grandpa said?”

I looked toward Arthur, who stood in the doorway now.

He heard everything.

“Yes.”

Ella stared at him.

Children do not understand why adults construct lies large enough to shape decades.

Sometimes that is merciful.

My mother spoke.

“Ella?”

“Yes?”

“I’m very happy to hear you.”

Ella smiled.

“Birthday cake broke.”

My mother laughed through tears.

“I heard.”

Gavin had called her before I did.

Interesting.

Maybe guilt had already made one good choice.

Arthur finally entered.

“Hang up.”

I looked at him.

No.

He saw it.

“You don’t know what she did.”

My mother heard.

Her voice changed.

“Still telling them that?”

Arthur went pale.

Good.

She continued.

“I left because he wanted me to choose between being his wife and being myself.”

Silence.

Arthur laughed bitterly.

“She wanted to take you away.”

“No.”

My mother’s voice sharpened.

“I wanted shared custody of my own sons.”

Ordinary.

Reasonable.

Impossible to Arthur because access was either total or betrayal.

I looked at my father.

Everything clicked.

He did not believe family survived through love.

He believed family survived through possession.

That was why Gavin’s obedience mattered.

May you like

That was why my daughter’s independence frightened him.

And that was why a birthday cake had become a battlefield.
