Chapter 7

Ella woke asking about the cake.

Not Gavin.

The cake.

“Can we fix it?”

Children prioritize differently.

I sat beside her.

“The castle?”

She nodded.

“One tower is dead.”

I almost smiled.

“We can make another.”

“No.”

She frowned.

“Same one.”

That mattered to her.

Not replacement.

Repair.

I told the kitchen staff to keep every usable piece.

Arthur thought that was ridiculous.

Of course.

“You’re rebuilding cake now?”

“Yes.”

He laughed.

“You see? This is exactly what I mean.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“You spend your time repairing things children forget in an hour.”

Ella heard.

She was sitting at the counter with a broken sugar window in her hand.

She looked at Arthur.

“I remember.”

Silence.

My father stared at her.

For one moment, he looked ashamed.

Then he recovered.

“Of course you do, sweetheart.”

Ella turned away.

Children hear fake softness too.

Later, while the pastry chef reconstructed the lower walls, Ella handed me her phone.

“Birthday movie.”

I almost said no.

Then I played the rest.

After the conversation between Arthur and Gavin, there was another voice.

Captain Hale.

He had left before I locked the family inside.

Hale said:

“What if Lucas refuses to apologize?”

Arthur answered:

“Then we finally make him choose.”

My chest tightened.

Hale:

“Between Gavin and Ella?”

Arthur:

“Between being a father and being Whitlock.”

I stopped playback.

There it was.

Not leadership.

Identity.

My father wanted the family defined so narrowly that loving my daughter too openly could exile me from my own blood.

Ella leaned against my arm.

“Grandpa mad?”

“Yes.”

“At me?”

“No.”

She looked up.

“Why?”

I thought carefully.

“Because Grandpa thinks family only works one way.”

Ella considered that.

“Like puzzle?”

I almost laughed.

“Something like that.”

She lifted the broken sugar window.

“Then turn piece.”

Simple.

Maybe.

May you like

Maybe the Whitlock family did not need me to abandon fatherhood.

Maybe it needed the old pieces turned until they stopped cutting everyone who did not fit the first shape.
