Chapter 14

Gavin apologized to Ella privately.

I stayed outside the room.

The door remained open.

He sat in a chair across from her.

No kneeling.

No performance.

“I did something bad.”

Ella nodded.

“You pushed.”

“Yes.”

“My face.”

“Yes.”

“Cake died.”

He almost laughed.

“Yes.”

She looked at him seriously.

“Why?”

That was harder.

He did not lie.

“Because Grandpa told me I needed to make Daddy choose.”

Ella frowned.

“Choose what?”

Gavin looked toward me in the doorway.

Then back.

“You or me.”

She stared.

Then said:

“That’s dumb.”

I had to look away.

Gavin laughed once.

Then cried.

“Yes.”

He wiped his face.

“It was.”

Ella held out one broken sugar window.

“You can help.”

That was not forgiveness in adult language.

It was invitation.

Different.

Maybe better.

Together they rebuilt one castle wall.

The pastry chef did most of the actual work because neither could attach sugar correctly.

Arthur watched from the far doorway.

He did not enter.

Later he asked me:

“You’re going to forgive him?”

“I don’t know.”

“He attacked your daughter.”

“Yes.”

“You should cut him out.”

I looked at him.

Interesting.

Arthur preferred extremes.

Control or exile.

Obedience or abandonment.

No repair.

No boundaries with connection.

That was his whole system.

I shook my head.

“Gavin loses command access for now.”

Arthur frowned.

“But remains family.”

“Yes.”

“He’ll resent you.”

“Maybe.”

“He’ll betray you again.”

“Maybe.”

Arthur looked disgusted.

“How is that leadership?”

I stared.

“Because uncertainty is not the same as weakness.”

He had no answer.

I continued.

“You taught us that the only safe family member is a controlled one.”

Pause.

“I’m done trying to make people safe by owning their choices.”

That included Gavin.

My mother.

Ella.

Even Arthur.

He was free to leave.

Free to disagree.

May you like

Free to hate me.

What he no longer had was the right to turn those feelings into rules for everyone else.
