Chapter 13

My divorce from Bradley was internal before it was anything else.

The wedding ring stayed in my desk for months.

Not because I wanted it back.

Because Elliot had seen me place it on the backpack.

That moment belonged to him too.

One afternoon he found it.

“Your ring.”

“Yes.”

“Bradley ring?”

“Yes.”

“Wear?”

“No.”

He thought.

“Trash?”

I laughed.

“Maybe.”

Then he surprised me.

“Give back.”

Simple.

It belonged to a relationship that ended.

No need for shrine.

I returned it to Bradley through Marco.

No note.

Bradley sent mine back too.

Good.

He began working at one of the warehouses.

Not family command.

Actual work.

Schedules.

Inventory.

Loading plans.

I chose the assignment deliberately.

He once used labor as humiliation.

Now he could learn work without hierarchy attached.

He hated me for that initially.

Then became competent.

Annoying.

People are rarely simple enough to remain villains in every room.

He apologized to staff he had mistreated.

Not all.

Some.

Progress.

Still no access to Elliot.

That required Elliot.

Not performance.
