Chapter 14

At six, Elliot invited Bradley to a school reading afternoon.

His choice.

I asked twice.

“Yes.”

“Sure?”

“Yes.”

No emotional manipulation.

Bradley came.

Sat in the back.

Ruth did not.

Elliot stood beside Miss Harper and read three short paragraphs.

He stumbled.

Started again.

Finished.

Bradley cried quietly.

I watched him.

Part of me wanted him to hurt.

Another part did not.

Both can exist.

Afterward Elliot approached.

“Did you hear?”

“Yes.”

“All?”

“Yes.”

“You said I can’t read.”

Bradley closed his eyes.

“I was wrong.”

Elliot looked at him.

“Really wrong.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“Books not heavy.”

Bradley almost smiled.

“No.”

“They can be.”

Elliot laughed.

Literal child.

Good.

Bradley asked if he could hug him.

Elliot thought.

Then nodded.

Short hug.

When it ended, Elliot came back to me.

Not choosing sides.

Just returning.

Bradley watched.

This time he did not interpret it as defeat.

That mattered.

Later he told me:

“I spent months wanting him to need me again.”

“And?”

“He doesn’t.”

I waited.

“He might want me someday.”

Better.

Need and want.

May you like

Different.

Bradley was learning slowly.
