Chapter 16

Ruth returned to family dinners after two years.

Limited.

Invited.

Not automatic.

She never entered the library alone with Elliot.

Her own choice.

Bradley eventually joined some events too.

Separate seat.

No husband role.

No command.

One dinner, Elliot dropped a book beside his chair.

Bradley bent to pick it up.

Elliot flinched.

Tiny.

Bradley saw.

Stopped.

Instead he asked:

“Want me to get it?”

Elliot thought.

“Yes.”

Bradley picked it up and handed it over.

No lecture.

No test.

No stacking.

Small moment.

Huge history.

Ruth watched from across the table.

Her eyes filled.

No one commented.

After dinner, Elliot went into the library by himself.

First time since everything happened.

I followed at a distance.

He touched the reading desk.

Opened the cabinet where the blue ledger once sat.

Empty now.

The ledger was archived elsewhere.

He climbed into the leather armchair Bradley had fallen into that day.

Opened his book.

Started reading.

I stood at the doorway.

He looked up.

“Mom.”

“Yes?”

“You can go.”

My throat tightened.

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

May you like

So I left.

The room belonged to him again.
