Chapter 13

Margaret’s turn came quietly.

I asked one question.

“Why was the envelope in the vase?”

Richard looked at her.

She froze.

I knew.

“Margaret?”

She sat.

“I put it there.”

Richard turned.

“What?”

She flinched.

Then laughed weakly.

“Fourteen years.”

He stared.

“You hid Eleanor’s envelope?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Margaret looked at me.

“Insurance.”

Of course.

Even her rebellion had begun as leverage.

“I heard Eleanor record the tape.”

“When?”

“The week before she died.”

Richard stepped toward her.

“You lying bitch.”

She recoiled.

Then forced herself still.

“You said I’d disappear too if I told anyone.”

Lily heard.

She looked at Margaret.

My mother-in-law saw the child watching.

Something in her face changed.

Not redemption.

Recognition.

She had been teaching Lily to endure the same fear she herself had never escaped.

“I hid the key.”

“Why the vase?”

“Richard hated it.”

She almost smiled.

“He never touched anything Eleanor loved.”

Richard’s face twisted.

“You lived in my house.”

Margaret looked at him.

“No.”

Pause.

“Eleanor’s house.”

He lunged.

My guards stopped him.

Margaret stood.

For once, she didn’t shrink.

“You made Daniel afraid.”

Richard struggled.

“You made Mark greedy.”

“Shut up.”

“You made me silent.”

His face reddened.

Then Margaret looked at Lily.

“And I helped you do it to her.”

That mattered.

She didn’t excuse herself.

Lily watched.

Margaret crouched slowly.

Not close.

Far enough.

“I’m sorry.”

Lily hid behind me.

Margaret nodded.

She did not demand forgiveness.

Good.

Richard laughed.

“Pathetic.”

Margaret stood.

He continued.

“You think apologizing to a toddler changes anything?”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“But I can stop helping you hurt people.”

Richard smiled cruelly.

“Without me, you’re nothing.”

Margaret’s voice shook.

“Then I’ll learn what nothing feels like.”

Silence.

For the first time, Richard looked genuinely afraid.

May you like

Not because Margaret had power.

Because someone he had controlled for decades had discovered she could survive his disappointment.
