Chapter 4

The stairs ended at an old council room.

No dust on the center table.

That mattered.

Someone still used it.

Seven chairs.

A fireplace.

One locked cabinet.

And an old tape recorder.

Not antique decoration.

Functional.

Beside it sat a stack of fresh batteries.

Daniel whispered:

“Dad.”

Richard said nothing.

I placed Lily with my captain.

“Stay here.”

She clung to me.

“No.”

I crouched.

“You can see me from there.”

Richard scoffed behind us.

“For God’s sake, Emma. She isn’t made of glass.”

I looked back.

“No.”

Then at Lily’s red wrist.

“People like you are simply too comfortable testing where children break.”

Richard laughed.

“She cries because you reward it.”

Lily immediately stopped crying.

Not because she felt better.

Because she was afraid he would punish her for proving him right.

I saw it.

So did Margaret.

I opened the cabinet.

Inside were bottles of whiskey.

Old Hart signet pins.

Three burner phones.

And one cassette marked CHRISTMAS — IF CLAIRE’S GIRL FINDS THE ROOM.

Wrong name.

Claire.

Not me.

A dead Hart cousin.

My pulse changed.

This room had been used before my marriage.

Before Lily.

I pressed play.

Eleanor’s voice filled the stone room.

“If you are hearing this, Richard ignored me.”

Richard lunged toward the recorder.

My guard stopped him.

Eleanor continued.

“My son-in-law mistakes possession for leadership.”

Margaret covered her mouth.

“He has begun meeting Calvin Calder beneath this house.”

Daniel looked at his father.

Richard stared at the floor.

Eleanor’s voice continued:

“He says it is insurance.”

Pause.

“It is betrayal.”

The tape clicked.

Then another voice.

Richard.

You don’t need loyalty if you control what men are afraid to lose.

My skin went cold.

A second man laughed.

Calvin Calder.

Children make excellent locks. Mothers even better.

Silence filled the room.

I looked at Lily.

Then at Richard.

His cruelty toward my daughter suddenly had context.

Not excuse.

May you like

Context.

Richard had been studying how to control families long before Lily was born.
