Chapter 15

The council lasted twelve minutes.
Richard expected an argument.
There wasn’t one.
His command privileges ended.
His private channels ended.
His access to Hart properties ended.
No police.
No courtroom.
No paperwork spectacle.
Just men and women who no longer answered when he spoke.
He stood.
“You can’t erase me.”
I looked at him.
“No.”
“What, then?”
“Stop obeying you.”
That frightened him.
Power like Richard’s survives through reflex.
People moving before they think.
Margaret apologizing before she knows why.
Daniel questioning himself before questioning his father.
Lily believing the floor might actually be where she belonged.
Once the reflex stops, men like Richard become loud.
“You owe me!”
Nobody answered.
“I built this family!”
Silence.
“I kept you alive!”
One capo looked at him.
“You sold our west routes to Calder.”
Richard turned to Daniel.
“Tell them.”
Daniel didn’t raise his eyes.
“Tell them!”
My husband finally looked up.
“No.”
Richard froze.
“You ungrateful coward.”
Daniel flinched.
Then steadied.
“No.”
Two times.
Better.
Mark removed his capo pin.
Placed it on the table.
“I helped open the gate.”
Richard stared.
Mark continued:
“I’m stepping down until Emma decides otherwise.”
No excuses.
Useful.
Margaret surrendered the keys she still held.
Then looked at me.
“I don’t expect Lily to forgive me.”
“Good.”
She nodded.
Harsh.
Necessary.
Daniel asked:
“What happens to me?”
I looked at him.
“You don’t see Lily alone.”
His face broke.
“She’s my daughter.”
“Yes.”
“I love her.”
“Then accept that she doesn’t feel safe with you.”
Silence.
“When can I see her?”
“When she wants.”
“And if she never does?”
“Then you live with that.”
Richard laughed.
“Listen to you.”
I turned.
He smiled.
“Children deciding adult matters.”
“No.”
I looked toward the stairs.
“Adults finally accepting the consequences of what children survived.”
Then my guards escorted Richard out.
No title.
No salute.
No one called him patriarch.
That was what I meant the night before.
Not Grandpa.
Lily could decide that word herself.
May you like
But patriarch?
Richard lost it before breakfast.
