Chapter 11

I brought my father to the estate.

Vittorio Rinaldi had been retired for four years.

He still filled a room when he entered.

Then he saw Erin.

And stopped.

“Daniel.”

Not her name.

Her resemblance.

Erin stood.

“My name is Erin.”

My father’s face broke.

“I know.”

He looked at me.

“What happened?”

I placed the recorder in his hand.

He listened.

Rocco.

Charles.

Daniel.

The old betrayal.

My father sat down before the recording ended.

“I believed Rocco.”

No one answered.

He looked at Erin.

“I believed him.”

She stared.

“You stopped helping us.”

His eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought your father helped create the ambush.”

“He died saving you.”

“Yes.”

The room became unbearable.

My father whispered:

“I know that now.”

Erin shook her head.

“You got to be wrong for eight years.”

There it was.

Not disrespect.

Truth.

My father accepted it.

“I did.”

“And my mom died thinking the Rinaldis hated us.”

His face collapsed further.

“I’m sorry.”

Erin looked away.

Sorry could not repair eight years.

Good.

Nobody pretended otherwise.

My father turned toward me.

“Charles?”

“Knew the route changed.”

His eyes hardened.

“Rocco?”

“Set Daniel up.”

My father closed his eyes.

His brother had used his trust to destroy the man who saved his life.

Then he asked:

“The support money?”

“Diverted.”

He looked at Erin again.

“Grace?”

“Ten.”

“Daniel had another daughter?”

Erin nodded.

My father almost smiled through grief.

“He wanted a house full of girls.”

Erin looked at him sharply.

“You knew that?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“He complained your mother would make him repaint everything pink.”

For the first time, Erin laughed.

Then cried harder.

Memory crossed the gap truth could not.

My father leaned back.

“Whatever is owed—”

Erin stopped him.

“No.”

He went silent.

May you like

“I don’t want eight years converted into a check.”

That sentence changed how we handled everything afterward.
