Chapter 15

The relief fund changed immediately.

Not into bureaucracy.

Into responsibility.

Every protected family got one direct Rinaldi contact.

No gatekeeper with unchecked authority.

No single Vaughn office deciding who mattered.

My father insisted on personally visiting the surviving families cut off under Rocco’s system.

I told him not to make promises he could not repair.

He understood.

Some welcomed him.

Some did not.

That was their right.

Erin refused monthly support.

Again.

“I can work.”

“I know.”

“Grace’s treatment is enough.”

“That money was owed.”

She looked at me.

“Then pay the dentist.”

Simple.

We did.

After the first appointment, Grace came to the estate wearing a temporary dental appliance and talking constantly.

Apparently silence had been mostly embarrassment.

My father loved her immediately.

Dangerous.

He bought her an enormous art set.

Erin glared at him.

He looked at me.

I looked away.

Not my problem.

Grace drew Daniel from an old photograph.

Badly.

Huge ears.

My father laughed so hard he cried.

Then she drew him too.

Even bigger ears.

Justice.

Erin watched from the doorway.

Something in her posture changed.

Not trust exactly.

Possibility.

I stood beside her.

“You okay?”

She nodded.

“She never met Dad.”

“She has pieces.”

“Not enough.”

“No.”

I thought about the recorder.

The ledger.

My father’s memories.

“You decide what she gets.”

Erin looked at me.

“What do you mean?”

“No one turns Daniel into a saint because we feel guilty.”

She considered that.

Good.

“He hated tomatoes.”

“Useful.”

“He sang badly.”

“Better.”

“He once broke Mom’s microwave trying to dry his gloves.”

I smiled.

There.

A father.

May you like

Not a martyr.

Families repair truth by returning ordinary details too.
