Chapter 4

The Walsh file contained very little.

Too little.

One page.

Daniel Walsh.

Deceased.

Support status: terminated.

Reason: breach of loyalty.

No details.

No explanation.

No signature from my father.

Only initials at the bottom.

C.V.

Charles Vaughn.

I looked at him.

“You removed them.”

He folded his arms.

“I followed instructions.”

“Whose?”

Silence.

I turned the page.

Nothing.

That made the answer worse.

“Who told you Daniel breached loyalty?”

Charles looked tired.

“Your uncle.”

My expression changed.

“Which uncle?”

“Rocco.”

My father’s younger brother.

Dead six years.

Another dead man positioned conveniently between truth and responsibility.

“What did Rocco say Daniel did?”

Charles hesitated.

“He passed information.”

“To who?”

“A rival crew.”

I stared.

Daniel died protecting my father from an ambush.

If he had leaked the route—

then he would have helped create the attack that killed him.

Possible.

But wrong.

Something about it was too clean.

“Was there proof?”

“Rocco said there was.”

“Did you see it?”

“No.”

There.

Again.

Someone wanted results without asking questions.

“And you removed two children from support because Rocco told you their father was a traitor.”

Charles’s jaw hardened.

“This family survived because we trusted hierarchy.”

“No.”

My voice stayed quiet.

“This happened because you stopped thinking once somebody above you gave the order.”

He looked away.

Then I noticed a second folder behind Daniel’s.

Same date.

Same initials.

THOMAS KELLER.

Another dead Rinaldi guard.

Support terminated.

Breach of loyalty.

Then another.

Michael Russo.

Same.

Three men.

All died within eighteen months.

All families removed from support.

I looked at Charles.

“How many?”

His face changed.

I pulled open the drawer.

Twelve files.

Twelve dead men.

Twelve families.

Every one marked disloyal after death.

Every one cut off.

This was not about Daniel Walsh.

Someone had built a system around dead men who could no longer defend themselves.
