Chapter 1

Grant looked toward the ballroom.

I followed his eyes.

Not the guests.

Not the doors.

Edmund Vale.

My estate steward for seventeen years.

He stood beside the champagne table holding a silver tray, face completely drained of color.

“Edmund.”

The tray trembled.

He put it down.

Then stepped backward.

One of my guards closed the ballroom doors behind him.

Vanessa whispered:

“Don’t.”

Interesting.

I looked at Edmund.

“Come here.”

He obeyed.

Harper remained pressed against my leg while Willa, Maisie, and June stared at Claire’s frozen image on the tablet.

Their mother.

Their real mother.

The woman Vanessa had apparently turned into the villain of their childhood.

I pointed toward the moldy bread.

“Did you know?”

Edmund looked at Vanessa.

Wrong.

“Look at me.”

His eyes returned.

“Did you know my daughters were eating that?”

“No.”

Too fast.

Harper spoke behind me.

“He knows.”

Every adult froze.

Edmund looked at her.

Harper pointed.

“He locked kitchen.”

My head turned slowly.

“What does she mean?”

Edmund’s lips moved.

Nothing came out.

Willa whispered:

“Mr. Edmund says little girls eat upstairs.”

Maisie corrected her.

“Downstairs.”

June shook her head.

“Nowhere.”

Three-year-old testimony.

Messy.

Contradictory.

Still enough.

I stepped closer.

“You told the kitchen my daughters were eating somewhere else.”

Edmund closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

There.

“Why?”

“Miss Vanessa said they had a private meal plan.”

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“You believed me.”

Edmund opened his eyes.

“At first.”

At first.

Important.

“And later?”

Silence.

Harper began crying.

“He saw bad bread.”

My stomach turned.

“When?”

Edmund whispered:

“Last week.”

“You saw this?”

“Yes.”

“And did nothing?”

His face broke.

“I thought it was one punishment.”

Vanessa hissed:

“Shut up.”

I looked at her.

Then Grant.

Then Edmund.

Three adults.

Four hungry children.

And one Christmas party overflowing with food twenty feet away.

I crouched beside Harper.

“Did Mr. Edmund ever bring you food?”

She nodded.

Hope appeared for one second.

Then:

“Vanessa took it.”

Edmund covered his face.

That was when I understood his role.

He had not created the cruelty.

May you like

He had seen enough to know it existed—

then helped keep the rest of the house from seeing it too.
