Chapter 5

Claire knew she was dying.
Not tomorrow.
Not exactly when.
But enough.
She recorded messages for the girls.
Birthdays.
Christmases.
Bad days.
First heartbreak.
Ordinary moments she would miss.
She hated the idea at first.
Then decided voice was better than silence.
I watched only two before she died.
Could not bear more after.
The drives were stored with her personal things.
When I went overseas, I asked Edmund to move several old trunks into secure storage.
That was when Vanessa found the recordings.
Not hidden.
Simply untouched.
She watched them.
All of them.
Why?
She told herself she needed to understand Claire.
Maybe true at first.
Then one message frightened her.
Claire said:
“If someone loves you after I’m gone, you never have to love me less to make room for them.”
That sentence should have helped Vanessa.
Instead she heard:
Claire remains.
Always.
No replacement.
No victory.
So she removed the drives.
Where?
A locked drawer in Edmund’s office.
He found them.
Asked Vanessa.
She said I wanted them archived until the girls were older.
Again my name.
He believed her.
Months later, when Vanessa began telling the girls Claire left because motherhood exhausted her, Edmund remembered the recordings.
He knew the story was false.
Still stayed silent.
Why?
Shame.
By then he had already helped isolate the girls.
Admitting the drives existed meant admitting he had participated.
So he told himself:
Vanessa is using harsh words.
Not true starvation.
Not real damage.
Adults survive morally through vocabulary.
Harsh.
Strict.
Adjustment.
Discipline.
Anything except cruelty.
The red drive I carried tonight had never been in the mansion collection.
Claire mailed it to me privately before she died.
A Christmas message for all four girls.
I found it three weeks ago in an old travel case stored at our overseas residence.
That was why I came home early.
Not because I suspected Vanessa.
Because I wanted to surprise my daughters.
I brought gifts.
Claire’s voice.
Christmas.
I expected tears.
Instead I found mold.
The timing felt like fate.
It wasn’t.
Just accident.
But Vanessa saw the drive and understood immediately what it could destroy.
May you like
Not her relationship with me.
The story she had built inside four children.
