Chapter 13

I found the rest of Claire’s recordings.

Edmund had not destroyed them.

He kept them inside a cedar archive chest in his office.

Fourteen drives.

Different colors.

Dates.

No secret exposé.

No instructions about Vanessa.

Just a dying mother trying to leave love behind without turning herself into a ghost controlling the future.

I watched none alone.

That felt wrong now.

The recordings belonged primarily to the girls.

We started with one.

Claire talked about Christmas cookies.

How Harper hated frosting on her hands.

How Willa tried to eat sprinkles from the floor.

How Maisie stole dough.

How June laughed whenever the mixer started.

The girls laughed.

Not cried.

That surprised me.

I had imagined Claire’s memory as tragedy because I was an adult.

To them she was also crumbs.

Songs.

Warm hands.

A red sweater.

The way she said “no” when they climbed furniture.

Memory can be domestic before it becomes sacred.

Good.

Vanessa had made Claire enormous and terrible.

We made her ordinary again.

May you like

Human.

Loved.
