Chapter 10

The six men never reached the main house.

Damon’s bodyguards stopped three at the north drive.

Charles’s remaining loyal security caught two near the greenhouse.

The sixth entered through the old conservatory tunnel.

He wore a Cross dock jacket.

Caldwell ring.

Perfect contradiction.

Exactly what the plan needed.

Damon caught him in the lower passage.

No gunfire.

No spectacle.

The man surrendered when he realized both families were waiting.

His name was Dean Mercer.

Not Cross.

Not Caldwell.

Hired.

Damon sat him at the old conservatory table.

The recorder beside them.

Grace remained upstairs.

Damon wanted her away from this part.

She agreed.

Choice.

Not command.

Charles stood across from Dean.

“Who hired you?”

Dean looked at Marcus.

Marcus laughed.

“Never seen him.”

Dean looked at Vanessa.

She went pale.

Then at someone behind Charles.

Damon noticed.

Vincent Rowe.

One of Damon's own senior dock captains.

Fifty-six.

Twenty years with Cross.

He had arrived after hearing about the black gate.

Too quickly, perhaps.

Damon slowly turned.

Vincent’s face remained calm.

“What?”

Dean looked away.

Enough.

Damon asked:

“Vincent?”

Silence.

The Cross captain laughed.

“You’re taking cues from hired muscle now?”

Damon said nothing.

Vincent continued.

“This is Caldwell dirt.”

“Let them drown in it.”

Charles looked at him.

Dean finally spoke.

“Rowe gave us the gate code.”

The room went still.

Vincent’s smile disappeared.

Damon stared.

“How?”

No answer.

“Why?”

Vincent looked at Marcus.

Then Vanessa.

Hatred.

Not fear.

“They promised balance.”

Damon almost smiled.

“Balance?”

“You’ve been swallowing territory instead of using it.”

Damon’s expression hardened.

Vincent continued.

“You made peace with men your father would’ve buried.”

There it was.

Old grievance.

Same disease.

“You think peace is weakness.”

“I think being loved by maids and widows isn't leadership.”

Damon’s eyes cooled.

Vincent realized.

Kept going.

“You bring a pregnant servant into the center of this and suddenly everyone is supposed to rearrange the city?”

Damon stepped closer.

“She carries my child.”

Vincent scoffed.

“Exactly.”

Then crueler:

“You let one unborn baby make you predictable.”

Damon stared.

Vincent smiled.

“You want to protect her.”

“Good.”

“That means we know where you’ll move.”

Charles understood.

The plan had evolved after Grace became visibly pregnant.

Vanessa and Marcus thought the child belonged to Vanessa’s husband publicly.

But Vincent knew better.

“How?” Damon asked.

Vincent didn’t answer.

Grace appeared in the doorway.

Everyone turned.

She looked at Vincent.

Then:

“You were at the lake house.”

His face changed.

Damon looked at her.

Grace continued.

“Five months ago.”

Vincent had driven one of Damon’s cars that weekend.

He had seen Grace.

Seen them together.

He knew before anyone else.

Grace whispered:

“You told Vanessa.”

Vincent looked away.

There it was.

The lie about the baby had never been random.

Vanessa had known Grace carried Damon’s child.

She called it her husband’s publicly to keep Damon from learning and to make Grace look shameful.

Damon turned toward Vanessa.

May you like

She stopped breathing.

The conspiracy had been using his unborn child as leverage before he even knew the child existed.
