Chapter 6

Margaret made the recording nine months before she died.

Grace was twenty-four.

Damon and Grace had not yet begun their relationship.

Vanessa and Marcus had returned to the old plan.

Why?

Charles had started stepping back from his family’s private business networks.

Damon had consolidated the Cross docks.

Two old houses were becoming stable.

Peaceful.

Predictable.

That threatened people who profited from tension.

Marcus was one.

Vanessa was another.

Damon listened to the next reel.

Margaret’s voice shook this time.

“Marcus found the conservatory.”

“He knows the key survived.”

“Vanessa believes Evelyn left names.”

“She didn’t.”

Damon glanced toward Vanessa.

Interesting.

Vanessa had spent months searching for something that did not exist.

Margaret continued.

“The real danger is the black gate.”

Damon’s jaw tightened.

“If they reopen it, men can enter Cross territory wearing Caldwell colors and leave wearing Cross colors.”

False flags in both directions.

War manufactured through costume and timing.

Charles looked sick.

Vanessa laughed.

“You’re all pretending this old plan still matters.”

Damon looked at her.

She continued.

“The black gate is sealed.”

“Is it?”

Her smile faded.

Damon took out his phone.

Called one man.

“Check East River warehouse nine.”

Pause.

“Black gate.”

Marcus looked toward Vanessa.

Tiny.

Enough.

Damon saw.

Grace did too.

Charles asked:

“What?”

Damon said:

“They know.”

Vanessa snapped:

“Know what?”

“That I still call it warehouse nine.”

Silence.

The current designation had changed three years earlier.

Only old Cross men knew both names.

Vanessa had just reacted to the old one.

Damon waited for the call.

Grace sat beside the recorder.

Her hands rested protectively over her stomach.

Marcus watched.

Then smiled.

“Still playing mother?”

Grace looked at him.

“You think carrying his baby makes you untouchable?”

Damon turned.

Marcus kept going.

“Pregnant women fall.”

Grace’s face went white.

Charles stared at his son.

Marcus smiled.

“Ask her mother.”

Silence.

Vanessa whispered:

“Marcus.”

Too late.

Grace stood.

“Say that again.”

He shrugged.

“Your mother fell.”

“You said pregnant women.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

Damon’s voice became cold.

“You connected the two.”

Marcus laughed.

“Everyone’s emotional.”

Grace stepped forward.

“My mother wasn’t pregnant.”

Marcus stopped.

There it was.

He had built the insult too fast.

Damon watched him.

Grace continued.

“You were thinking about me.”

Marcus’s smile disappeared.

Then Damon’s phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

His face changed.

“What?”

Charles stepped closer.

Damon ended the call.

“The black gate is open.”

Silence.

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

Marcus looked away.

Damon continued.

“Fresh tire marks.”

“Two vehicles entered in the last twenty-four hours.”

Charles’s face hardened.

“Who?”

Damon looked at Vanessa.

“That’s what we’re about to find out.”

Then his phone buzzed again.

A photo.

One of the warehouse guards had found something lodged beneath the gate.

An ivory coat button.

Designer.

Monogrammed V.C.

Vanessa Caldwell.

May you like

She stared at the image.

For the first time, she had no insult ready.
